Evening (Or Morning/Afternoon depending on which part of the world you are logging in from),
I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the first session I had with the instructor. Although it was only for 30 minutes, we started a little earlier and finished a little later. He was kind enough to leave me some balls after to keep practicing and said just pop back in when you are finished.
We had started off by asking how I gripped a club. We picked up a 7 iron from my mixed bag of clubs. They had some markings which looked like two thumbs point forward, I presume to give you a rough idea where to put them
So I gripped the club and was asked if I was feeling comfortable with how I gripped ... to which I replied no.
So was shown how to grip with my left hand first, making sure that I have a v shape point towards my right shoulder and that two knuckles should be visible when I had my final grip. Bit difficult to explain, but I understood what he meant. I then proceeded to place my right hand over, again, he explained to me that it should feel natural, as if I was bringing my arm up to shake someones hand. I had practiced this quite a few times till I understood how to hold it with what felt like a quite comfortable grip.
I was then shown what my stance should be like, in terms of how wide my legs should be, making sure my back is straight etc Then was asked to strike to ball. My shots were going in all directions (or not being hit at all) ... so then looked at my posture and swing length. I was asked to shorten then length slightly, then as I hit the ball then lift my chest up/round to the left (I kept doing this before so I ended up missing, or "top spinning".
A few more tweaks here and there and I was hitting the ball consistently (i.e not missing), and almost hitting straight on one of them
...
So in terms of how it went, I really did enjoy the lesson. My back/shoulder was a little sore as were my hands, but I suspect over time (and with some suitable gloves) the experience will be better.
The instructor said as homework was just to practice with the 7 iron with gripping and with posture so will be doing that in the evening in the garden.
I bumped into a friend who had liaised with my wife on getting the lesson who was playing 36 holes that day (had a break after the first 18) and asked if I enjoyed it, to which I emphatically replied yes.
So next steps now are for my wife to block book a set of 6 lessons (Buy 5 get 1 free) and through my friend has managed to negotiate a discount on top.
Quite looking forward to my new venture ... and as my friends wife said to mine Friday evening ... be prepared to not see your husband for most of the day when he is playing
I'll do some more swatting on the forums to avoid the usual "have you searched for it" comments, but thanks again for the welcome
Cheers,
