Oddsocks
Ryder Cup Winner
Last week while playing in our monthly medal I had the pleasure of taking nearest to the pin on our 14th. Not a technical hole as such, 120 yards off the whites, slightly down hill, 2 bunkers in front of the green and a green that slopes front to back.
Plumped a nice easy 9iron up to about 6 foot pin high and walked off with £11.00 prize money. Bonus!
Well today was a different story, I seem to leave my swing in doors, really struggling with the odd flash of a swing clearly dismissed by the following shot.
By the time were arrives at 14 i was beaten mentally, and in a passing joke " last week I won nearest the pin here, bet I don’t this week "
What proceeded was a sheer flash in the pan, a perfectly sweet low punchy 9i (intended shot) to stay low out of a tail wind. As soon as it left the club it was on the pin, but with the pin at the front being close we couldn’t see the bottom of the flag so had no idea it was close. All the guys in the group laughing saying " if that’s in your in the money your take about £100 home " as we have a rule any guys playing in the swindle most donate £5.00 per player to anyone with a hole in one. By now I am all excited thinking it would be a nice way to finish a sh*t round. As we get half way down the hole the cup becomes visible and from 50 yards away, it looked like it was leaning on the stick. Same from 40 yards, 30 yards and at 20yards, but when we go to the fringe it has stopped less than 2 inches bang in front of the hole.
BUGGER!
Still yet to have a hole in one, but this was without doubt as close as I could possibly get without it going in. and with the pitch mark being 2 ft in front of the flag dead in line, I’m taking the credit too!
Now the fun part, on returning to the clubhouse we were the last group and had collected the nearest the pin markers, including the one which I had knocked out on the 14th. (the guy I beat was at max 10 inches away.)
Our comps sec had already sorted up the swindle fund, and he asked me who won the nearest to pins, i real off the winner of 3rd, 8th, 10th and 13th, and he looks at me and says " 14th?" ...
"oh that would be me"
The guy I had beat was sick, even when he left me mumbled “ cant believe 10 inches was beat “
Don’t know why he was moaning he won £40.00 for the stableford best points that morning.
