I am a Member of a pay as you play 9 hole course and it costs me virtually f'all - I have never played the course and don't want to either but use it so that I can hold an official handicap which allows me to play in Open competitions.

I play Wentworth on occasion with some mates, and played at Chart Hills and Royal St Georges earlier this week. In the next 8 weeks I will play Prince's, Littlestone, North Foreland, Hindhead, Ferndown, The Oxfordshire, Knole Park, Deal.

What makes me think that Royal Ascot ain't that great is that I have played it - it is OK, it's a bit short compared to most new courses (what is about 6300ish?) and it needs another couple of years but you cannot compare it to the private members clubs round at all but of course it is strides ahead of the munis around our way.

I am sure the chaps at GM are adjusting the Top 100/200/500 courses now to fit Royal Ascot in......

Oh yeah and I am still bitter you didn't choose me to play yesterday too!!!!! (lol)

Funny that Royal Ascot won an HSBC Gold Medal as published in Golf Monthly last year. That was without another year of growth and the extra work done on the course.

You are lucky that you get to play a number of great courses and opens.

The recent I didn't pick you to play was I was looking for a forum member who contributes on a regular basis (not just 30 odd posts) and would appreciate the day. As you hate the course so much it would have been such a trauma for you to have lowered your standards. If and when we get to play something similar or I hold a GM forum society day you will not be invited!

Bulldog, have you thought about Lytham Green Drive? I believe it is a nice parkland course and very close to you. I am intending to play it in the next couple of months.

Thanks - I was planning to wash my hair that day anyway! I don't hate the course at all but it's not my cup of tea, maybe I'll get over their in the summer and see how it is now (assuming you don't get me barred!!) :D

lol Don't worry about that old fart over there 44 going on 65.

I long for the day, in fact I spend all my week dreaming of the day that maybe one day just one day I might be able to make the GM forum society day and be accepted on a golf forum lol.

The above differing opinions on Royal Ascot show that you really should play a course before you part with your hard earned cash before you join.

I had a choice of two when I moved to a new house. I went to one where I was told that I could book a round on a Tuesday at £25 with a view to joining, pro was not sure if that would be deducted when I joined.

At the other the pro asked me if I had my clubs with me as he would let the young assistant take me on a round for nowt there and then. The course was good and the excellent treatment I got made my mind up straight away

What happens to those members who paid joining fees last year or the year before to find that they have now been abolished. If it were me I would be annoyed to say the least and looking for a refund. Has this happened to anyone or caused any problems.

I take exception to your comments. I always thought you had a penchant for upsetting people and this proves my point. My beef was with Sammiebee and his critiscism of the course (unfairly in my view) particularly the sleight at GM and the way the courses are ranked and the fact that he has the hump because I didn't invite him. I chose not to because at the time he was still a relative newbie and I wanted someone who had supported the forum.

If he is obviously that disenchanted with the course and not long enough for his needs why should I consider inviting him to the next event. If I am organising a GM society day why should I invite somebody I don't get on with?

If that makes me an old fart then fine

Not yet buti think it might happen soon

I paid a joining fee when i joined my new club three years ago.

It had been extended to 18 holes seven years ago. There was no joining fee then as they wanted the numbers up. When the numbers got close to the required amount the started charging a joining fee.

now the numbers over the last three years have decreased slightly and they are no looking for more members. Trouble is very few clubs in the area currently have a joining fee and most people are heading there.

The only way to get the membership back up would be to stop the joining fee which would leave me none to happy

To avoid this, my club has gone the other way and offered some attractive discounts on the annual fees. I got in on the 35% discount for under 35s and there are even bigger discounts for juniors. Basically the current membership is aging and dwindling so need to attract some younger members.

What we really need is a smilie that has a fishing pole and a hook......

SammieBee

That was then and this is now. We moved four years ago to a purpose built course that is much longer and a greater test of golf. The old course inside the racecourse was very short and in the summer wasn't much more than a glorified pitch and putt. We also lost a days play every time there was a race meeting.

The new course is maturing nicely. We had Golf Monthly playing yesterday and they rated it very highly. What makes you think the new course "ain't that great".

I'd be interested to know where you play. Apart from municipals like Downshire, Blue Mountain etc there isn't many other private members courses apart from the big names in the local proximity. The nearest comparable one for me would be Sand Martins in Finchampstead which I don't rate either as a course or as a club (I know several members and they often talkabout the atmosphere and politics).

Hi Homer,

The course that i am a member at is in the center of a race track(Doncaster) so i was just intrested how long was you old course??? Mine is over 6000 yards par 69 and a very good test of golf.

lol Homer is so easy to wind up, if people get upset about what is said on a forum they have more problems to worry about that me upsetting them.

Anyway I hope you have a great GM society day and wish you all the best organising it Homer. ;)

ps. How is the PM gang doing?

The old course was only 5800 par 68. To be fair it wasn't much more than a glorified pitch and putt in Summer. There was only one par 5(the first) which was reachable and a long par 4 of about 410 uphill (4th). The rest were all pretty short and some par 4's were easily within reach most of the year!!

The new track is a much longer and tighter and presents a sterner but fairer test

Guys you really all need to stop bitchin. No offence meant to any one or not directed at anyone in particular but pack it in. If your only on here to wind people up, then go to toys r us and by a kids clock.

Hell of a lot of people now browsin this place and a few joining in. But if they keep readin this stuff, there gonna go else where. Including existing members.

Listen, am not saying dont share your opinions, Am blatently saying dont wind people up. simple.
