I just want to play golf regularly again. Between the ages 16-18, I played all the time, getting down to 15 but the round of my life was 10. (The Mendip) But since moving house and coming to uni, I have hardly played- Been trying to join all summer and nowhere will let me play! So its been driving range and putting green for me. Is it generally true that clubs dont accept new members now, or is it my area???

Thanks lads.

Where do you live. I guess if you've alread told them you don't want to play regularly they don't see you as an ideal candidate. Most courses around me will let you in and you only pay a proportion of the yearly subs (although you still pay the joining fee in most cases). Are there no pay and plays or munis that have clubs attached that you could join. These usually work out cheaper in terms of subs and you just pay the green fees when you play

Living in Cheshire- Looked at Dunham forest, ringway and Mere (which is frightfully expensive!) I come home to work at weekends while at uni so would play in every saturday competition. I told them I would be looking to play 3 times a week even while at uni since my student house is in driving distance (25 mins) of the course!
Is it that I have been asking for student memberships???

Im gutted because I've been dying to get back to playing regularly for a couple of months and the feeling only strengthened when I hit 4 over par gross front nine while out in France! (The back nine was absolutely shocking but i didnt care!)

Not sure about where you are, but at my club, which is rather elite in some ways, they have reduced memberships from Junior all the way up to 30yrs of age to encourage young people to play.
Young players are the future for clubs, so if they arent offering you some kind of affordable terms, its rather short-sighted perhaps.

Maybe thats just 'Chesire' for you ? Good luck however.

haha, it is cheshire all over mate! Mere was 900 pounds for a 'colt member' Thats ridiculous. Both dunham and ringway are very reasonable but they've said I will be put on a waiting list till early 2011.????

Dom - Im from Altrincham and just started playing. Have a look at Styal Golf club if its not too far from you.

Not sure about your age but 18-27 yr olds pay £235 a year for full 7 day platinum membership. Thats FOC access to the 9 and 18 hole courses, all comps and green fees etc...

Im joining later on this year when im back from Australia, to practice in time for next season.

That is strange that they don't accept new members this late in the year. i just joined my local club (Bryn Meadows) because they put a winter deal on which was half the price..

Not sure where you are in Cheshire, but Poulton Park have a rolling year, so if you join now you pay for a full year, and your renewal will be every August. Nojoining fee.

Must admit it's a puzzling attitude, RND is a bit like that, all their memberships run Jan-Jan, I think if you join after July or something you get a small discount but you'll still be renewing come January, which I don't like, not to mention the idea of trying to finf the money to rejoin right after Christmas, when all those bills need paying (that's why I left in the end) the other place I've been going is much more flexible, your membership is simply a calendar year from the day you join, I just don't know if I can deal with 8 shots suddenly being added to my handicap, which is what will happen if I join there!

thanks lads, high legh looked very reasonable but they are in administration so are taking no members- the rest are a little to far- a 30 minute journey compared to the 5 minute journey to ringway or dunham.

lymm looks very good, only 7 miles away as well!! Gonna give them a ring

seriously, there is a ridiculous amount of golf courses in cheshire!

If you don't need to stump up cash, why not just put your name on the waiting lists? If you find somwhere to play in the meantime, great, if not, you've at least got the ball rolling.

I joined my club in Septeber last year and they did a deal with me paying £150 + a joining fee to allow me to play up to mid-February. Great value.

Just keep looking but, as I said, get your name on the waiting lists! :)

What in the hell are golf clubs at. If they don't become more flexible businesses they deserve to sink below the waves.
Some of them seem to act like snooty Porche dealers in central London or so I'm led to believe.

Ascot will let you join part way thorugh the year for a percentage of the annual cost for the remaining months until April. You just pay full fees come next April for the following 12 months. I can't understand any club not wanting members (unless it is full and not many of them around)

We lost quite a few members to Lymm this year, some have already come back, others will be back next season. Very snooty.

Is that your place? Me and the girlfriend were going to join there this year as we both play at different clubs at the moment

Yes.

part of the problem with dunham i think is that I dont know anyone there- I didnt even get a form to fill out to join a waiting list. I have no recommendation.

Does anybody play out there want to be my hero and recommend me?
