Jobs for the youngsters !

You mention student debt, but what percent actually do earn enough to ever pay it off? I think this should be a message to shake up the further education system and get rid of many courses and universities

I know that the number is relatively low but what's the point of going to uni, getting a degree and then it being assumed tha you will benefit from learning to march ?

However, I don't disagree that many degrees are worthless and that training in the workplace is in many cases, is very beneficial

This is why apprenticeships are so popular now. They are a real alternative to university and there are quite a lot of options. There are people from my kids years at school who would have been classic university students in the past who have chosen the apprenticeship route.

Lots don't want the debt, like the idea of earning straight away. Let's hope not too many of these schemes are put on hold because of current events.

Maybe if the unemployment numbers reach what's predicted there's an opportunity to offer voluntary redundancy to the 64/65/66 year olds?

Can’t see that they have been raising pension age
A lot of people can’t afford to retire.

Thats why my post says voluntary. Whatever happens, there’ll be benefits to pay out. Would the govt want 3million(predicted) unemployed or 2m unemployed and people retiring early. Money is still being paid out but what buys the most votes?

My son was due to do his GCSE’s and then spend a few weeks doing the National Citizenship Service - promoted (but not well) by the Govt this was an excellent resource to learn life skills and contribute to some socially beneficial projects...all for £30 which included a residential stay. I’m gutted for both the GCSE and the NCS as I think it would have really been beneficial to my son, but we move on and hope others coming after him have the opportunity.

I think Wolf is right here. Some, let's say 'older people', reckon it would 'sort 'em out' but we're talking about a totally different generation with different motivations I think. Whereas teenagers and young adults of yesteryear just buckled under, today's younger generations would just make it known they don't want to be there and not put any effort in. Seems like a waste of time all round.

Growing up knowing you'll have to do military service is one thing, but if you took the youth of today and suddenly said, right you're all doing military service - it's not going to elicit many positive responses.

Good for your son. It will look good on his CV. As a (past) employer it is the sort of extra evidence I'd be looking for when considering candidates.

No do not bring back national service for anyone not choosing to serve. I would never want to serve alongside someone that has effectively been forced to be there.

I am not military, however, this for me is why national service should not exist. IF I were to be fighting for my country, I would want my mate next to me to have the same drive, desire and passion as me. Not a person that is reluctant as they have been forced into it.

Social call up I think yes why not with an option to chose the military should you so wish would be a decent compromise.

Problem is it’s been cancelled this year so he’s missing out, didn’t make that clear.
my point was there are schemes for youngsters to develop themselves at little cost...and without the need for the military

Adverts starting to go out around my area looking for students etc to volunteer for field work. The work is paid and can come with accommodation.
