Jimmy just needs 2 wickets

I deliberately left out wicket keepers as I think we have been very lucky in that dept, Knott, Stewart, Prior spring to mind immediately.

Not that lucky!

Knott was absolutely top class.

Stewart was top class batsman who turned himself into a very decent keeper (at first he was terrible).

Prior never managed that trick and, as a keeper, was one of the worst England have ever had.

Botham was around in a golden era of all rounders. Hadlee, Imran Khan, and Kapil Dev. I always thought Botham was the best batsmen, and Hadlee the best bowler. Botham was also the best fielder.

Dan - are you of a certain vintage or just know your history/averages etc. Half of your team I only know from the history books. I would have to squeeze Gower in there somewhere and throw in Underwood. Often forgotten due to finishing early but his record is hugely impressive and on his day he was unplayable.

Good to see you went with a gloveman rather than a batsman who can keep wicket.

I just know my averages, and prior to golf was as addicted to cricket, so have read a lot about the game and know a fair amount about the legends of the game, or at least I did.

Knotty had to be picked. Best keeper we've ever had. Not the best batsman, but that's not his job. Prior shouldn't even be mentioned alongside Knott. Awful keeper, that just about made himself passable by the end of his career. It's a real shame that chaps like Foster and Read didn't get more of ago. Foster is the best keeper of his generation.

No Underwood or Statham ?

Laker > Underwood for me, and don't know a great deal about Statham. He does have an excellent record though, but having seen so much of Anderson, I had to give him a go.

Just realised I've missed one of the best bowlers of all-time when picking my team, the great Sydney Barnes. With him in, Flintoff is out.

Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Hutton
Pietersen
Barrington
Botham
Knott
Trueman
Laker
Anderson
Barnes

Good luck facing that attack in swinging conditions.

Trueman and Statham were the best English opening attack. They could get wickets on all tracks. To me Anderson is great on home pitches, green, and where the ball swings. His record abroad though is not nearly so good.

Underwood is the best English spinner I have seen. Bowled at a much faster pace than the rest, almost medium pace. Swann was easily the next best. Unbelievable how much he improved as his test career progressed. Probably consistently spun the ball more than any English spinner on a flat track.

Agree re: Swann. I don't think anyone expected him to have the impact he had on the England team. I don't think I've ever seen another England spinner live who you just felt could pick up a wicket every time he ran in to bowl. He had such good control not only of where he was putting it, but also how much he wanted to turn it, and matched that with a brilliant cricket brain. Probably the player England miss most currently, would love to have Swann back in the England side.

Slightly missing my point Dan, lets say you are the selector, you have space for 1 all rounder. Fred and Beefy will play their best ever game for you. Which one do you pick? To face players of Today. lets say its the last ashes test at lords and its 2-2.

Botham. All day long.

This. Probably heresy, but Anderson is overrated because of this. When it's a flat pitch, he's average at best. As a strike/opening bowler he is far behind the top boys: Jimmy averages a touch under 30, where as the best ones are very low 20s. I'll get my tin-hat on...;)

I always like watching an innings by Colin Milburn who's career was sadly curtailed when he lost an eye in an accident
