'Japanese Market Only' Clubs

Why are they so bling?

.... And so expensive

Is golf only for the richer populous in Japan or am I missing something?

I dread to think what green fees are if this is the cost of equipment!

Can someone enlighten me?

I think so Gaz, I remember going to Japan at the beginning of the 90's when i worked for an American Investment Bank.

got taken to the beach one day and there were loads of young guys wearing golf gloves.. asked why and told golf was a big status thing and showed you were well off if you played or in these boys cases looked like you did.

Very strange lot the Japanese

Nah Baz.

I 'Came across' them on eBay and nearly fell over when I saw the price :smirk:

Its possible from something I read a month or so back that these will be the 716 MB and will be available in the UK later in the year.

Those irons are truly yucky!

JMO gear can be really special or totally bling! And TourSpecGolf specialise in it. They are the natural descendents of BombSquadGolf when Todd Thrun was the owner of that site - and have used some of his shady practices at times too!

If you really want bling, try the Honma Beres 5-star kit, or any of the Gold plated Drivers that are available! I once saw a ladies 4 ball whose bags and clubs would have cost around £8k each!

And a guy who was hosting a couple of Vips was using one of his 3 sets of £35k clubs - He keeps a set in each of his primary locations so that he doesn't need to carry them!

There is some nice stuff there though, but be careful. A mate bought some JMO R7 Forgeds, at considerable cost with shipping and VAT, a while back, only to find that they were being released to the European market a month later!

Had a feeling you would have the low down on this....

Memberships used to be 6 figures annually - $ not Yen. There may be some available a little cheaper now but fundamentally most learn on a range (to cat 1 ball sriking) and fly off elsewhere to play!

Freudian srip (sic) there?

Indeed, when Wentworth, Dukes (St Andrews) and several others (Camberley? Old Thorns) had Japanese owners, it was cheaper to fly to these and play rather than play at a Japanese course! And the cost of a hole-in-one was significantly less too!

The taste in Japan is for blingy clubs. Japan is the second biggest market for Scotty Cameron Tour putters, often with lots of stamps and engravings. There is some interesting stuff made only for Japan, such as forged Vokeys, but a lot is also pretty garish. .

Also a huge market for Bettinardi putters.

There are some pretty neat boutique Japanese Putter manufacturers too!
