Saw an interesting article on the Scientific American website this morning. Here's the text:

Golf fans always suspected it: before his infamous improprieties, the mere presence of Tiger Woods could panic other pros. Now, economist Jennifer Brown has figured out how strong that “Tiger factor” was.

She analyzed a decade's worth of PGA events, controlling for variables like weather, course difficulty, prize money—even the distracting crowds and media at a Tiger tournament. And she found that when Tiger was in the hunt, other golfers scored 0.8 strokes higher—that is, almost one stroke worse—than they otherwise would have over a four-round tournament. And one stroke can be the difference between congratulations and condolences.

The effect was strongest for top-ranked players—the ones competing directly with Tiger for the big money. In fact, Brown calculates that Woods has raked in an extra $6 million dollars in winnings through this fear factor alone. Her analysis appears in the Journal of Political Economy. Tiger's halo of intimidation DOES wane in years when his performance slumps. But with a big tournament victory last week—his first in two years—it might not be long before his competitors are once again in the rough.

I think most of the pros knew that already ... doesn't explain when he wins by 8 shots though :)

Interesting to apply some stats to what most of the other pro's knew!

As for Smiffy, the only thing he's rolling with is Golden Virginia tobacco! ;)

hmmm interesting.

they touched on this with zach johnson and he brushed it away like it didn't effect him and tbh he never really showed any signs of faltering,he didn't really do anything wrong.the only thing he did wrong was not make any putts like tiger did...until when it really mattered.

tiger had to win last week,it wasn't given to him and zach played well and forced tiger to have to do something...which he did!!!

Good to see scientists and economists looking into the really important issues, now that they've found a cure for cancer and ended the global recession.

A load of gobbledegook IMHO.

The only thing Tiger did do was to make the pros look at their fitness more and try to improve their game in order to compete and reach the higher level that he aspired to.

Was the Tiger factor really an issue. I guess you need to ask people like Meidate for their viewpoint. I can't see how winning an event by four or five shots as he regularly did in his prime makes a difference. If he goes out and shoots a 65 he's going to be hard to stop anyway.

It certainly didn't seem to be a factor in the RC where his record isn't that fearsome

Where do I get a job like that? It really is quite unbelievable what some people ate getting paid for. By the way, That 0.8 shots really made a difference when he was winning the US Open by 15 didn't it
