It's a very strange sport!

That's what I said!

Now do you have a question or were you just repeating my comment?

I think you undertand what I'm questioning. You see I would have thought that someone playing off 4 would have a pretty good idea of how they hit each club, would have a pretty good and consistent ball strike, would have a decent short game and could sink a putt or two.

Now on top of that, I'd also say that someone who carries only 7 clubs has the ability to hit 1/2 & 3/4 shots with the clubs they carry to be able to hit he ball the distances required.

Someone who has all the abilities above is, I would say, a skilled golfer and I would expect that such a person, who can regularly break par with just 7 clubs would have sufficient skill to break par while carrying 14.

Now I'm not doubting you can break par with 7 clubs, but I refuse to believe hat you can't do it with 14.

thanks for elaborating.

The answer is quite simple. I'm a magician with the clubs I carry. However, put a 5 iron in my hand and I turn into a wreck. When I am more than 150 yds from the green, I'll use either my hybrid or -even further away - my fairway wood. Now if I was carrying my full regelia, peer pressure would force me to use a longer iron.

So you're a 4 handicapper who regularly breaks par. You hit a hybrid from 150 and up, you coach golf (i believe that's what you said in an earlier post), but you can't hit a 5 iron?

I'm gonna be respectfully sorry, but I'm not buying it. I'd be quite concerned if my golf coach couldn't hit a 5 iron

Ballesteros couldn't hit a fairway with the driver but he was a pretty good golfer. In the end it did finish him, but we didn't look down on the guy. Baker Finch gave up for soimilar reasons.

I can't play long irons, but give me a hybrid and I will often knock it stiff from any distance between 150 and 200 yds.

It's your opinion that a coach should be able to hit every club in the bag and I believe he should be able to hit from any position on the course with the clubs he choses to carry.

I'd take a lesson off Butch Harmon and he plays off 12. I wouldn't expect him to be able to hit any decent shots but he should be able to a) explain the theory to me b) be able to see what I'm doing right/wrong in my swing - that's his job!

I'd take a lesson from a decent coach even if he was in a wheelchair whereby he couldn't even hit one shot let alone a decent one.

That said I reserve the right to not believe a word you're saying Patrick - no offense

I'd expect my coach who plays off 4 and regularly breaks par to be able to hit a 5i yes. Especially one skilled enough to do what he does with other clubs.

I just can't buy that someone who has the skill to knock it close with one club from anywhere between 150 and 200 yds, can't hit a 5i ( which I always thought was a mid iron, not a long iron?)

You're original point, that anyone could play with 7 clubs is probably true with practice, I don't know why you'd want to but we're all allowed our opinions.

Something doesn't quite ring true about your claims with other clubs. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
