Hi Guys, i posted a while back about wanting to create a VPN from home for my dad to use when he is in France. We have decided to buy a dedicated VPN device, would the below be suitable?

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/produc...bit-wan-vpn-router/data_sheet_c78-706724.html

Will be connecting to my Sky Fibre network, any issues there potentially? I assume it doesnt need a server attached or anything and will just connect to my router?

Help an idiot day guys! Thanks!

For nearly 20 years I have managed to pretty much avoid cisco kit so cant comment on it but, I would heartily recommend a draytek 2820 or similar. It can work as the router with vpn ability built on. I use one at each of my 6 main sites.

Thanks Brendy, would i connect that to my BT Open reach modem or my Sky Router? I know sky are a pain and i dont think i could use this to replace...

i'll 2nd draytek kit, I know quite a few SMBs that use them for VPNs.

3rd for Draytek

Mikrotik Router OS is pretty good also

sky wont offer any help in setting up a 3rd party router but plenty do use a different router to the sky one. IIRC you needed a tool to extract the user logon details from the sky router as they are not easily visible.

cool, the draytek wins then.

Idiots guide to set up please!! connect it to my modem (fibre) or my router (sky) just concious that sky are buggers and you cant swap their router. I dont want any changes at home really and wont use the wifi features, its litterally so my dad can tunnel to the UK so he can watch iplayer etc from France!

I dont see any reason why you can't use the draytek as dedicated VPN and keep your current router, but you will need to do some port forwarding on the sky router I would think . What do they give you these days?

There is a ton of useful stuff at http://www.skyuser.co.uk/

Thanks Paddy, just found that forum, loads of info! they give you a Sky Hub Fibre Router SR101F-Z at the min. if i can swap it out easy, then great. Think it may be a bit beyond my capabilities, so might end up inviting one my geeky mates round....

Swapping the router out should be easy enough, there wil be plenty of how to's out there.

Thats where i started to get confused!! downloaded a thing called wireshark to extract my user name and password from my network, but TBH thats confusing me!! will sit down properly and have a thorough read!!

also fan of Draytek, we have 2 very good ones and just upgrading to bigger ones (yes very technical I know). Would one of my Drayteks I'm swapping be any use to you? free of charge to you of course?
