I've killed my laptop. Totally bust the hinges and now there's wires all over the place and half the keyboard takes prodding with a pitch mark repairer.

Took the teenager into a few stores to try one or two out (crikey, they are so poo on demo mode).

I was going to mail-order an Asus, but neither of us could work the touchpad very well.
Both liked the typing on the Lenovos, good keyboards those, probably experience from IBM.

Anyway, I know the brands that are bad for reliability. I also know the brands that are almost impossible to recover from OS or HDD failure as the recovery media is known to fail. (Not mentioning for fear of libel)

What have you got?

Is it decent? Anyone using a top spec windows laptop?

Don't tell me to buy a mac.

I'm going for i3 most likely, then replace the HDD with an SSD using the recovery media.

Top tips? Go for it....
 
I've got an acer, was about £350, not missed a beat! 3 years on and it's still running smoothly just run usual clen up programs.

Check eBay daily, weekly and general deals, they've usually got decent spec lappys really cheap.

If you start rogering about with changing parts you'll fudge your warranty, what's the point?
 
You can't not mention the names you know, in your opinion, for fear of libel (insert laughing smiley as none seem to work anymore).

Anyway I've had Dell and HP for around 14 years with 1 lemon, not the sexiest but pretty good. Go on their site for the not new ones (can't remember the name) as any returned or cancelled orders cannot be sold as new, had a few very high spec around half price but what you see is what you get with the factory outlet ones, you can't tweak them but they add different ones each day.
 
Yes my laptop is great for what I need, BUT if I buy again in the future I would probably buy a Rock

For everyday browsing and fourm etc it takes a bit of luck to get a good bargain. I was fortunate with my i5, got it for £340 in the Jan sales. Its a HP Pavillion G6, the build quality is pretty poor but boy did I get value for money spec wise!

With modern i5s you can play pretty much any recent game on low res (still playable) with few issues, its got plenty of power it it for the graphics processing (known as onboard).
 
Had my HP i3 for a couple of years. Its used almost every day for at least a few hours - I don't watch TV much. It seems a hell of a lot quicker than my works one, which is a Dell, also i3. Had HP ones for work previously and have found them very reliable, better than Dell and on a par with Toshiba. If I had to replace it I'd go for another HP.
 
My latest is an HP, and I wouldn't buy another one. i7 core as well, but it overheats so easily which renders it as fast as my old BBC 32K.
It has a light on the lid that you can't turn off so I have to cover it with a magazine if I need it to be running at night, and you touch one touch sensitive control along the top of the keyboard and they all randomly fire at crazy speeds until you turn all the HP processess off in task manger. Pile of rubbish.

The one before was Lenovo, and was the best lappy I've ever had.
 
I was going to treat myself to an iMac, but discovered that the software I use to draw up floor plans isn't compatible with OSX. I know you can run Windows on a Mac using Parallels software, but the cost was becoming prohibitive by the time all the various bits were added together. Have therefore just ordered a Samsung laptop with an i3 processor, 6GB RAM and a 500GB HDD for only £370 from PC World. It's being delivered this evening and I'm looking forward to using it.
 
Acer Aspire 5750 here. Great laptop. i5 Processor, 3GB RAM and 500GB HDD. More than enough for what I use it for.
Picked it up on ebay for less than 400 notes. Great speed, good colour and doesn't get too hot.
I ordered it at 1pm on a Wednesday thinking I would get it after the weekend, it was sitting in my shed when I got in from work on the Thursday!
 
Thanks to everybody. I'm off now (in the car) to look at a few more before deciding.

Whoever mentioned not swapping the HDD for SSD, I think that's probably safest. It'll run fast enough for the 1st year (during the warranty) and then I'll do it. Good shout.

I can see tomorrow being wasted removing all the excess baggage.... :(
 
The deed is done. Lenovo idea pad Z570. Better not need 4 handles and 3 heads like my last laptop.

Last one, a Compaq had 3 hard drives, 4 batteries, 6 chargers! My yearly order from amazon for those wretched chargers is over.
