Is tomorrow the beginning of the end for long putters/anchoring?

Forgotten what I was going to post now.. spent ages looking for this DISCUSSION thread and seems someone has moved it to the RULES section from the normal section where we discuss all things golf.... never mind... erm.... ok,... bedtime :mmm:

Is the 3 year lead in time to give those with humungous bellies time to diet?

And if they don't diet, how does a referee decide if the putter was being anchored by the belly, or the belly was unavoidably being supported by the putter. Especially if the putter is the normal length.

Bradley doesn't seem to perturbed about it all......

there were 2 threads about the same thing James so they were merged into one. As it is a rules issue its in the right place :D

No problem, it's just I thought this part of the forum was for direct queries about the rules eg. can my partner clean his golf ball when it's in a bunker. Now I know,... it's for talking about long putters :D

Interesting discussion on SKy Sports Golf tonight. According to Denis Pugh who has discussed it with a senior legal counsel there is little chance of a law suit succeeding in Europe but under US law would have a better than 50/50 chance of winning especially if a glut of players got together and put a joint case in

Didn't hear much about Lawsuits when they changed the groove rule did we.....

I don't see what they can cite - the clubs are not banned. Just the way they're held.........

They should all just grow a pair and start practicing.

I saw on a thread some time back that a lot of practice still needs to go into using a long putter - any one of them thought about using that practice time for a normal putter...?

I have to say I found their discussions rather child'ish, and certainly confused.

Example - One minute they are saying it should be immediate, and the next they focus on an inference that players using that technique are currently cheating. The obvious inference of any delayed implementation for anyone who stops and thinks is that they are neither seen to be gaining an unfair advantage or 'cheating' within the current rules.

As to the legal implications; we live in a world where these will have been gone through at a level that makes DP's sweeping statement look more than strange - this is sensationalism, or should we just call it modern journalism?

I know of one forum member who uses a short putter who believes his technique (which involves forearms/hands touching his body in a very compact stroke) who believes the new rules may force him to change his style also... Could he be right or is he looking into it too much?

Easiest way to think about is that the putter can touch the hands and fore-arm only.
If it's being.held avainst any other part of the body then its against.the proposed rule..

So would a broom handle be ok if the top of the handle was anchored against the chest but with the thumb inbetween?

(ignore my poor art)

I believe it is, or will be, a bit more than that - to cover all anchoring, including with a hand or arm in betwen the club and the body as per Kellfire's pic. Wouldn't cover Scott's (I think he anchors) nor most Long Putter actions otherwise - just Belly ones.

i have said it before the R&A along with the USGA make the rules, your invited to play on tours using these rules,if you don't like the rules don't play and find another job that will pay you a few million a year for travelling the world in first class,i said when this was being muted that some of the yanks would start crying, simple answer to them from the governing bodies, rules get changed and if you cant play to the new rules then hand your card in and we will find players that can.
