is this possible in a year with my handicap , i am currenly off 30, and what do i have to do to achieve it

by march 2010 = down to 23
by july 2010 = down to 19
by october 2010 = down to 17
by december 2010 = down to 15

i am 13 and have only been playing about 4 months , still learning and inproving

Practice, practice, practice. However much depends on how much natural ability you have.

An improvement of 15 in a year is not an unrealsitic target bearing in mind how new to the game you are, get that short game razor sharp and you can do it.

Nothing is impossible and I wish you luck, however you are young, still growing physically and mentally and it takes a certain subtlety to do this stuff properly which is often not present until mid to late teens.

Also it is important to set yourself goals that are realistic as you will get disheartened if you dont get there. and to regularly reassess those goals

So I suggest that you look at your first goal, from 30 to 23 in 3 months, this is do-able, so in March, look at how you did, if you only got down to 25, its no problem, adjust your next target down a tad, if however you crack 20, then aim for a higher target next time

also bear in mind that as you get better, the harder it is to get cut by huge amounts. It is easy to knock 5 shots off if you are a 30 hcp, much much harder if you are off 10.

Also remember that everyone has a leveling out point where their game settles and it will take a great amount of time, effort and lessons to improve from here, this level is different in everybody, YOU are nowhere near finding this level yet, BUT if your level turns out to be 20, dont worry, ENJOY the game, the handicap system is there as a leveller.

read the mags, play with different people, talk to thse people , learn from their mistakes and wisdom.

BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FUN

:D

Take some lessons , practice like crazy and work on your short game. Most of the young guys where i play slash there handicaps throughout the summer as they as good as live at the club. There always on the practice ground and nipping on the course when its quiet to play a few holes.

Good luck

In short it is possible but depends on how much natural talent you have to a certain degree as well as how well you are coached and is reliant on you practicing properly and ingraining the right things and not just grooving swing faults.

My advice is have to as a target to get to but don't set all these intermediate targets throughout the year. If you miss one for any reason it'll knock your confidence. The good news is that from your starting position the shots will come tumbling off as you start to play well but it will become harder once you reach the 20-15 mark to play to your handicap consistantly and to beat the CSS and buffer zone.

Get yourself a teaching pro (not necessarily your club pro if you don't like his methods but is conveniant) that you know will teach you in a way you can understand and explain what you are trying to achieve. He'll be able to set out a detailed plan and focus on the areas that need work. I agree 100% with the comments about making sure you have a sharp short game and putt well.

If you find yourself mid-season and not reaching your target don't despair. You have plenty of time on your side. Remember golf is about having fun and shouldn't become a chore or a task to try and achive a specific handicap. Enjoy playing and playing well and learn from the mistakes along the way. Good luck. Its a tough ask but you seem to have the drive to get there. Keep us posted on your progress

Read a book called "dream on" by john richardson. This guy went from 104 to a single round of par within 12months.

Whilst I have no desire to be as obsesive as he was, the book was inspirational and I've read a few books he had and I've found a bit more joy come in my game.

The two main books are Hogans 5 fundamentals of golf and Bob rotella's Golf is not a game of perfect.

Incedentally. I'm a 25 handicapper and played 11 holes at the weekend before the light dimmed. I was only 6 over par.

Yes it's definitely possible, as everyone else has said practice, practice, practice.
I got down from 28 to 9 in approx. 7 months when I was 16 without having a lesson. My swing was awful but I could get up and down from anywhere within 70 yards from the green and I felt like i could hole every putt I looked at. That was all down to a lot of practice on the short game.
I wouldn't recommend doing it without having lessons though as it took me a long time to get rid of the bad habits that I got from being self taught.

You need to live, breath and eat golf.Pay for regular lessons and be single minded and determined. If you want it, you will do it but you cannot afford half measures. Good luck.

Hi, new to the forum but wanted to say your target is realistic. Like birdieman said concentrate on your short game and watch those scores fall. As a tip, keep your right foot firmly planted on the groung through impact to stop your right side getting to active early. Just try it with a short/half pitch shot and watch the difference.
Good luck you can do it.

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum.
When you say keep the right foot planted through impact, I take it you mean just on the short/half swings and not the full swing?
