we were regarded as a nation of shopkeepers- we are reverting back to type.

Greater manufacturing and Engineering investment is required, lower corp tax and healthy grants for re-investment.

Coming from an industry which is intrinsically linked to the building trade (a good indicator of the current climate according to the boffs on radio 5) I'd say the economy has been on the up for maybe the last 18 months.
At it's worst a few years ago customers were going bust on a regular basis, now most are nigh on booming. My employers order books for new machines are chocka for the majority of the year, something I haven't been able to say for a long time.
Still haven't had a decent pay rise yet though!

Can't see the big attraction of the High Street compared with out of town malls.

In addition there is a great increase in on-line shopping so in the 21st century the High Street as we once knew it is an anachronism. Personally I am glad of the fact as they are inconvenient and inaccessible.

Money, it's a crime
Share it fairly but don't take a slice of my pie
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a raise it's no surprise
That they're giving none away.....

:mmm:

It appears to be but I remember the 1990's crash.
Folk were very cautious for a long while, I think the same will happen again.

Don't forget one of the first signs will be interest and business rates going up, there will be many mortgages holders a bit nervous on that.

I'm prepared to bet that we will not see interest rates at those levels again in our life times.

Newbury high street is great if you want a coffee! In town we have:

3 x costa
1 x starbucks
2 x cafe Nero
1 x pret a manger
1 x greggs
1 x #1 coffee
3 x local independents
2 x Cafes in dept stores (debenhams and John Lewis)
1 x Boswells

I am sure i am missing some too! But as yet, nowhere for decent Sushi! Lots of chain restaurants though! Ask, pizza express, Strada, Cote Brasserie, The tapas one, Prezzo, Bills etc etc etc

So come to Newbury if you are hungry or thirsty.

So plenty to eat and drink, but nothing to buy and take home..........apart from a costa cup!!!!!!!!!!!

Would rather see Charity shops doing well than "swanky cafes" and "sushi" bars.
thats the scouser coming out,i had a coffee and a danish at our new COSTA yesterday, nice coffee danish a little dry but they gave me a voucher when i told them, only thing that put me off was the drunk having a piss against the church in the main shopping area,no wonder our town centre full of pound shops scum,

Maybe he was a saints fan after the match the other night......

I like the Coffee Shop culture, it gets people out and mixing it. Local Costa and Nero has Groups of young Mums, Pensioners, and all walks of life enjoying a local meeting house. Bring it on I say, beats a boarded up shop front.

Still ticking over. But new car sales are massive at the moment.
Maybe it's the range of cars we now have, maybe it's the finance offers, I don't know.
But as I say, I've never been as busy.

My garage is on the blower every other day as my PCP finishes this year.. trying to flog a new car rather than used.. apparently finance on new is way way better than used. Haven't taken the bait yet..

Why buy used?
I can do a new Nissan about 30 quid a month cheaper than a 2 year old one, and it will come with 3 years free servicing, (which a used one won't), 3 years warranty and 3 years full RAC cover.
Some silly deposit allowances being given out at the moment (£2500.00 on a new Note!) which makes it a much more viable proposition.
I'm almost tempted myself!!
