Just been told that fees are going up by 2% next year to cover cost of new equipment and increase in minimum wage, this will take cost to £1300 + which is on average £400 more than most of the other local courses. The advantage is there is 2 courses, disadvantages is reliance on societies from October you struggle to get a tee time till after 12 so won't play 18 holes until clocks go back !

So what should I do, also interested if any other forumers in Nottingham where do they play

Is 2% really that high a rise especially as it's being reinvested in the club and equipment. Clearly though it's a lot to pay compared to your neighbours and there are issues. My question would be are you prepared to go it alone and not have your normal partners to play with initially or are your PP's thinking of jumping ship too

If its North of notts ramsdale is not baf at all bat cardic hill. After that norwood where tashboy is a memeber £700 gets you full 7day membership. Coxmoor i have heard is not bad at all. If you fancy looking for my nalls i will take you round Norwood. (Notts club of the year)
Ps where are you playing at now

2% is a pretty reasonable increase tbh, on your 1300 quid that's only £26. That kind of increase wouldn't bother me, ours are going up by £25 and I only pay half of what you do so my percentage increase is double yours.
The issue of tee times and it being dearer than other courses is a whole different matter.

You at The Nottinghamshire by any chance?

I am also a resident of the finest city in the UK but am not a member anywhere. As I live the north side I tend to play Ramsdale, Oakmere, Springwater and very occasionally Sherwood Forest, Coxmoor and Notts. But that's once in a blue moon.

Have you looked at Wollaton? They are on the look out for new members and have waived their joining fee. Me and a couple of mates are quite tempted, there is at least one member on this forum.

At the Nottinghamshire, have been a member there for several years and yes there has been a lot of investment but at what cost , weekends are full of societies with members struggling to get tee times. Have taken a look at Ruddington, Wollaton and Beeston to see what they have to offer. Live South of Nottingham, played Norwood loved it but a bit too far... The 2% increase isn't a lot but just made me think what are pros and cons

If I was paying that sort of money and struggling to get a tee time I'd be moving on. Played Beeston back in the summer and would be on my list

If societies took priority over members on a Saturday I wouldn't pay 50 quid a year , let alone 1300+

whats the point of 2 courses if you cant get 18 holes in for 6 months of the year?

Beedles lake must be around 20 mins from The Nottinghamshire.

Price wise a lot less and it's a fantastic set up with very good greens.

I am also a resident of the fine city of nottingham, play at oakmere myself they also waved joining fee at the time (not sure about now) have checked out other courses in the area and after weighing up my options must say I'm pleased with my choice. I'm not a massive fan of ramsdale myself, not to be a member of anyway, but wouldn't knock the course it's pretty good. I would take a look at Norwood and Wollaton both great tracks imo

You are paying twice as much as me, the average round here is 500-700 quid but I also have to put up with societies. TBH they are a pain in the rear end but I have yet to play anywhere that does not have societies on one day or another, or forum meets for that matter. wonder how the members feel when we go away on forum meets.

At our level we play for enjoyment. Judging by the post above, you are clearly not enjoying it, so why would you pay over 1300 quid for somewhere you are not happy at?

+1.

And +1 to all of this one.

I played the Nottinghamshire just the other week and thought that the course (Open) was excellent for the time of the year, far better than any of the out and out parkland courses anywhere in the country that are struggling with the current wet weather, so, I wouldn't be too hasty. I thought the facilities overall were also excellent and it's always great to see & hear of constant investment being put back into a course.

With that said, I played on a Saturday morning around 11.20 and there was a society of about 4 x 3-balls not far in front of us which had, let's say, very inexperienced "golfers" amongst them!

So, instead of regretting a move which in the circumstances you have explained would be understandable, I would be asking the club as a member either at your AGM or in writing, or both, what could be done about the issues you have raised.

I personally would be asking the club for the 2 courses to be split at weekends, so 1 (Open) was for societies and visitors on Saturdays and then flipped (Masters) on Sundays, this then offers the members the same but the other way round, if this wasn't possible for any reason then I would be asking for societies and visitors to have tee times only after 11.30 at weekends, either way I would be asking the club for its direction and remedy in what is being seen possibly as the members being treated second to the ad hoc revenue of visitors & societies, which are needed and are important for such a set up that you have, but there also has to be some common ground, respect and forethought for the current membership.

I note you have a 14-day booking priority and when committing to 3yrs the membership costs fall to just over £1k, that's the same as most clubs then IMO and you have some insurance through Carrick Neill thrown in also, so i think you need to raise the question as I think you could regret a move otherwise as it looks like the issues are only over the winter months, no doubt when members play less, more tee times become available and so outside revenue is sort more!

Wollaton would be an excellent choice though staring a ginormous stag with a 4 hrad of horns is a bit "squeaky bum time" greenkeepers must be going bonkets filling in deer hoofs on the greens. If your paying £1200. £700 willa get you most other courses with £500 for new bats 😜
