Is golf competitive?

Ok bear with me a minute, a friend has commented that I have become very competitive since I started playing golf. Now I admit, I am trying to play the best I can, thats natural, everyone should try to do their best matter ever they are doing, but is that really competitive?

To my mind being competitive is doing all you can to win and trying to affect the way your opponent plays, but in golf you can't really do that, maybe a little in matchplay but not much.

If anything,playing golf makes me more chilled out! I can't see how playing can make you more aggro off the course,maybe it's your friend who has the problem?

Is it in general or is your enthusiasm and desire to improve quickly meaning a lot of your talk is about golf? Hence your friends views.

It's human nature to want to do better then someone else who is carrying out the same task.
Because you want to play better, the concept of "better" becomes subjective of who you are playing with/against and the desire to play better [than them] automatically takes over.
As PB says, as you are enthusiastic about the game then it may be exaggerating the situation.

Either way i wouldn't worry about it

I wouldn't get too hung up. I always go out to be as competitive as I can whether that means winning my match or trying to be my handicap. As long as I play within the rules, respect the traditions of the game and upkeep the etiquette I'll woprk as hard as I can to shoot as low as I can everytime.

I'm competative, if it's against an opponent in a matchplay comp of against the course and myself in a monthly comp. I even set myself little challenges when I'm playing a practice round on my own. I like to add pressure to my game.
