Is Football Finished?

Just to use another rugby example, my brother is a season ticket at Tigers, with that he gets a free season ticket for his son until he is over 11. Seems like a great way to keep sport accessible to kids

But it's only an option because demand isn't there. If demand was higher, these deals wouldn't exist.

The fact that most EPL teams can now run at a profit without any spectators should send an alarm bell ringing.
No crowd = no atmosphere = no interest in game. Perhaps the TV companies will dub in the crowds.

Interesting that these clubs will still charge extortionate entry fees/season tickets when in reality they could let the fans in for nothing.

Its not finished, its just evolving and will continue to evolve. It may, eventually, go the way of American Football did way back when many clubs folded and the NFL/AFL was born.

Jeepers... I'd just like to mention there's a whole lot more to football than the Prem or any of the other top tier leagues... Footie will only be 'finished' when there's not enough folk willing to turn out for any of the many 'local' teams playing in a park near to you any weekend of the year...

On my village playing field you tend to see more kids playing rugby than football

You get that in certain areas, always have done. The Border areas are big rugby areas for example. Leicester, Bath, Gloucester are big rugby places in England. Come to the NE of England and it is football central. Yes there is rugby but it is very much a minority sport in this area. Unless it has changed Liverpool and Manchester were the same.

Not a big football fan, I just follow the team my mate plays for so Middlesborough now was Bristol City last season.

I must admit from seeing him over a couple of league games attendances can be poor at times unlike big cup matches. Not seen him at the new club yet but i imagine stronger attendances.

Haven't La Liga just confirmed they are to play 'x' number of matches in America now? Probably for an obscene amount of money. Wonder if the PL will follow suit or any other lower level clubs which could boost attendances. OR is it just bad for the game. I don't know or care to be honest.

Flint will do really well at boro, top defender.

That to a certain extent true (though Tigers have had to substantially increase their ground size over recent years as they have a significant number of season ticket holders).

Did a recent report not say that premier league clubs really did not need ticket revenue. Surely this is an ideal way of making sure this and future generations get to see their club live.

Or from the football club's perspective - an ideal way to charge as much as they bloody like without having to worry about what happens if people stop coming.

Not in my mind. It's changed, not wholly for the better and needs a radical boost at grass roots level with kids given access to decent pitches and facilities. I miss the unique atmosphere of standing on the terraces and if it works in Germany I feel it could work here again.

Leicester is not really a rugby town from the playing point of view although the Tigers are the best supported Club side in England.

Local kids play football in far, far greater numbers than rugby. When I lived in Somerset the same was true of Bath.
