I have a birthday before Xmas so going to save anything I get from B'day and Xmas to put towards irons. In some respects I don't need irons but out of boredom/lack of social life I will be getting some anyway!

I was considering getting players cavity backs (looked at R9TP, FG Tour and X Forged as an option recently) but a mate of mine who works at a driving range reckons I should just get a better GI set than I already have as there is no drawback to increased offset and it improves consistency. I was hoping for a bit of help from everyone on here as to the pro's and con's to either approach!

I am not a great ball striker in terms of compression and distance, I'm working on it over the winter with my pro. But I don't make many major errors, quite often my bad shot is a weak slice that stays in play but comes up short and a bit right of the target.

I am unsure of whether to go for a G20/Razr X style iron that I know will be very easy to hit or a player's cavity such as JPX 825 Pro/Taylormade TP-CB. I'm concerned that if I do improve my ball striking the offset GI iron will potentially cause a hook or create a swing path which allows for the offset club face, which could create issues with my swing on woods and wedges. I may have a steeper learning curve getting used to a player's cavity, but I wont outgrow them if my ball striking improves.

I'm not looking to have maximum workability as I won't have the time over the next few years to get to a level where moving it both ways is important. I just want to become a better overall ball striker. Obviously the easier to use the better but I don't want to get too much assistance and groove a "lazy" swing. Appreciate any thoughts or comments!

tricky one. i would suggest you go and try as many as you can. i know what you mean about outgrowing them too quick, but in all honesty, you alluded to not going crazy in the next few years re improving (or at least trying to!) so i would go for what works right now! not what will work in years time after you hate the game as the clubs are better than you current ability (hope that makes sense)

Taylormade RBZ irons will be coming down in price now the RBbladze are coming out soon.. I use Burner 2.0 and was worried I would outgrow them too quick.. No chance of that happening if i am honest, and no reason why they couldnt take me down to low teens h/cap. (its me, not the sticks!)

Good luck in your search for new shineys!

hi mate. Have you tried kingswood at thorne/hatfield.Its only 15 mins from you, they have flightscope, full fitting facilities with different irons, shafts, lies etc. ask for nikki hodkin.
They charged me £30 for fitting, bit dont charge if you buy.
I couldnt get a bean of discount even though i did a grand in,in fact i got a couple of lessons with new clubs.
worth an ask, the flightscope is very good.

I'll recommend any of the JPX range.

The 800s (normal & pro) are nice clubs and they'd be a damn sight cheaper than the new (also beautiful) 825s

I never hesitate to recommend MX25s (or 23s even). Forged, forgiving and can be used forever!

+1
Love my Mx23's
Get on ebay and save yourself some money. Better yet buy my mx23's with r300 shafts, I needed a stiff shaft so bought another set with s300s in them.

Hi mate, I think you need to see what your budget is then get out there and try a load out. Don't be tied down by one or 2 brands ,as sometimes it is the brand you may not of considered before , that could be the one you hit best mate.

Good luck in trying them all out though.:D

Or the mizuno mp53 beautiful iron

But seriously hit them all I hit atleast 20 different irons and that's just getting feel lie look right in yer mind

Then you have to get custom fitted to get the right shaft

Thanks for the advice will get out trying some, seems that most of the recommendations are for clubs that tend to be closer to a player's cavity so I'll start looking at those sort of clubs first!

I was looking at irons today and some of the GI irons are fugly beyond belief, look way too chunky with massive soles

The Mizuno range is nice and the TM RBZ , Wilson Staff Di11 is still hard to beat

Not keen on the Ping had G10 in the past and didnt like them from a look point of view, played ok but not as good as the Di11

Some good deals around at present if you shop around

Yeah I am wondering if and when the RBZ irons will come down in price, the Rocketbladez are out next week!

Quite like the look of some of the Wilson Staff Irons will give them a bit more investigation thanks!
