I have a birthday before Xmas so going to save anything I get from B'day and Xmas to put towards irons. In some respects I don't need irons but out of boredom/lack of social life I will be getting some anyway!
I was considering getting players cavity backs (looked at R9TP, FG Tour and X Forged as an option recently) but a mate of mine who works at a driving range reckons I should just get a better GI set than I already have as there is no drawback to increased offset and it improves consistency. I was hoping for a bit of help from everyone on here as to the pro's and con's to either approach!
I am not a great ball striker in terms of compression and distance, I'm working on it over the winter with my pro. But I don't make many major errors, quite often my bad shot is a weak slice that stays in play but comes up short and a bit right of the target.
I am unsure of whether to go for a G20/Razr X style iron that I know will be very easy to hit or a player's cavity such as JPX 825 Pro/Taylormade TP-CB. I'm concerned that if I do improve my ball striking the offset GI iron will potentially cause a hook or create a swing path which allows for the offset club face, which could create issues with my swing on woods and wedges. I may have a steeper learning curve getting used to a player's cavity, but I wont outgrow them if my ball striking improves.
I'm not looking to have maximum workability as I won't have the time over the next few years to get to a level where moving it both ways is important. I just want to become a better overall ball striker. Obviously the easier to use the better but I don't want to get too much assistance and groove a "lazy" swing. Appreciate any thoughts or comments!
