Irons advice

Hi,

As a new user, I'm not yet "qualified" to offer advice to answer anyone else's questions but I hope that no one minds if I start by asking for others to offer thier advice instead...

Golf is not my "main" sport so I generally only get to play in the summer months but this year have managed to play at least once a week at my local club. Whilst I don't have an official handicap I'm pretty consistantly going round in about 12-16 over each time. I can hit the ball a reasonable distance and get decent height with it.

My clubs are nothing special - they came from a sports discount store about 3-4 years ago and have graphite shafts.

The question is, will my game benefit from some better clubs and the technology they claim to offer (or is it just marketing) and if so, what sort of thing should I be looking for?

(thinking iron's first as they're the single biggest purchase)

I know I'm not good enough for players irons and don't want irons where everything down to the wedge looks like a hybrid and so guess I'm looking at game-improvement stuff.

I need advice as to what I should consider please - I don't think I can walk into a pro shop and ask to try every possible club.

Looking around the web I'm thinking Nike Slingshot 4D or Sumo's, Cleveland CG7 or CG Gold's or Taylormade Burner's but to be honest I have no idea if i'm looking at the right sort of clubs at all?

Hi, and welcome.

You'll get a lot of advice on here. Some contradictory, some conflicting, but mostly useful.

If there's a big store (American Golf, Nevada Bobs, Direct Golf, etc.), try some out. You should be allowed to have a go in their nets or even out on a range. You just have to ask.

Some sets do suit different types of swings, and as a beginner your swing will change over a short space of time. So from that point of view I'd steer clear of 'draw' bias clubs. These are clubs designed to help eradicate the slice. Only problem is that they can contribute to a hook later on as you get better. It's better to learn how to hit the little white ball properly in the first place.

You don't mention a budget, which is critical to what's available to you.

Personally. Just go in with an open mind and see what's suggested. However beware of the 'own-brand' push from the sales guys. Nicklaus, John Letters (I'm sure others will add as required).

Quality brands include (but not limited too!) Mizumo, Ping, Taylor Made, Titleist, Callaway. Last years models tend to go for good prices, so check them out.

I'm sure that you'll get alot of good advice on here. Keep us informed.

PS. I don't know a great deal, so please don't take what I've said as gospel.

Apart from the top names already mentioned why not look at MD and Benross who do some decent kit at a good price. It sounds as though you want some sort of cavity back and these can range from big oversize cavities (TM burner 09 or Cally X22, Nike VR for example) to ones with slightly less cavity (TM tour burner) and right down to things like the X22 tour or TM tour preferred.

There are loads out there and my advice would be to try and find a demo day near you where several manufacturers are in attendance or go to American Golf or the like preferably one where there is a range as you can't really tell much hitting into a net and trusting the computer. You really need to see how the ball flies. Also be aware that AG will try and flog you Nicklaus, Hogan, Wilson and Yonex as these are their biggest mark ups and will be reluctant to try and let you try others first. Stick to your guns.

I know there are a lot of guys on here that use Mizuno and in particular the MX200's which seem an ideal choice and would probably fit nicely into what you are looking for. I've hit them and they are pretty good (not for me though) and I'm sure someone will give you better feedback.

One of the joys of upgrading is trying all the shiny sticks. Don't let yourself be rushed or try stuff you know you won't want.

Ping G10s (or second hand G5s) and you can't go wrong really. Good sell on clubs too. If you can't play with these, you can't play.

Not sure in your situation I would go any where near Titleist, they don't really make stuff in your category, and it will be expensive.
