Just a quick one, i know you can't use iphones for GPS info etc during a comp round, but can I use it to keep/store stats as I am building up a nice database now from friendly matches.

I havent in previous medals etc but wondered if it would break a rule?

Thanks

your still using it on the course and who's checking what you are actually using it for.

You have to fill out a card so just input all the card figs into the iphone at the end... simples

Very negative way of thinking that Vega, golf is one of the sports where you should be trusting someone unless they give reason not to.

Personally if I were to use it during a competition I would talk to the person marking my card and explain what I was doing and that they are more than welcome to check at any time.

Only time I use mine as a GPS is during a friendly, a practice round or on society days.

Ahhh...not quite so simple - it goes into quite a bit of detail, which side fairway missed... number of chips/sand shots/putts. Also the lengthe of all the inoput putts and which side of the hole they missed on. Cant see me remebering that lot lol.

Cheers for the answer though, ill keep it switched off in my bag !!!

Have you got the putter app, would be interested to know what you think, personally I like it, tried it with our pro and had putter custom fitted using pro's knowledge and app info, putting great just now!! (untill sunday)

The app is the Ping putter app, it measures swing tempo, face angle etc etc you need i phone +, its a free app but you have to buy a cradle to clip onto the putter shaft.

Its a useful gadget on the practise green, its not for taking on the course, if your thinking of changing putters its useful feedback as to which type of putter should work for your swing type, see if your pro has a cradle he might loan it to you to try!!

Putt to Brute

To answer the OP's question the answer is yes as long as you are not processing or interpreting the info. So if the software is just a database that's fine. If it generates graphs, tracks trends etc then no you can't use it during the round.

of course its not negative- silly comment- its reality and practicality, you cant use them on the course in a medal so why leave yourself open to accusation and argument over what you were really doing!
Plus the fact it takes time to input all that and might slow play down

Yes it does, you soon forget its there, you hit 5 putts from 10 ten and it calculates face angle, face position, tempo and gives you a putting h/cap, you can compare that with Ping staff pro's.

I understand that its the clubs desecration as there are some issues with the compass. No one seems to know why that would ever be a problem, its not orienteering...

Slow play down? You can get a range quicker with the iPhone than you can with a visual range finder...
As for silly comment, each to their own really.

I guess there is the element of trust between golfers and I get the phone out on each tee and enter stats etc. But to be safe I will leave it when in a comp.

Regarding the Ping app - yeah I do have it, its free to dowload but the cradle which you clip to the shaft is about 20-25 quid.

It is pretty good as it encourages consistency so you do 5 putts and it gives you certain measurements and the more consistent you are each time you do another 5 putts you receive a better 'putting handicap'.

So if you have a strong arc and the face is 2 deg closed at impact, but you do it all the time, chances are you will be a good putter!! I find my face angle changes but my tempo is very consistent.

I used it a bit but manly helped with a new putter, I had a centre shafted scotty red x and the app suggested a more anser style putter so I got an Odyssey #1 and i am putting much better with it. Probably dropped 2-3 puts per round but generally i rarely miss 3 footers now but with the scotty that would be pretty regular.

If anyone (trustworthy.. lol ) on here wants to give it a try I am happy to send them the cradle on the basis they can give it a go then send it back, rather than fork out 20-25 quid and find it a waste of time.

clubs desecration? are you by any chance using a mobile device with predictive text?

have you used a skycaddie?, or are you referring to your eyes as a visual range finder:rolleyes: maybe you mean a Nikon one?
anyway.....
I was referring to inputting all the data onto the phone for each shot might slow down play if you'd read the post properly:rolleyes:
