Hello all,
As a long time lurker, and now GM reader, I felt I ought to finally register, as I played my first round (9 holes) on Sunday.

Brief golfing history, and I'll try to keep it short!!

About 3 months ago, a buddy of mine that is moving away announced he was learning to play golf. I'd always fancied it, and thought it'd be a great way to keep meeting up every now and again. So after a quick chat with my Dad, who used to hack his way round in his younger days, we decided to get lessons together. (My GF and Mum also decided to have a go, and are also now taking lessons).

Being a bit skint, can only afford one lesson a month, so have been going to the range 2/3 times a week trying to get the hang of this tricky game! The plan being, once i've been shown most required shots, i'll then crack on and play golf.

Anyways, got to the point where my Iron hitting is kinda consistent (yeah, right!), and had a short game lesson last week (I've now had 3 lessons). Then Mum foned out-the-blue and said, 'that's it, had enough of the range, we're going for a round!'.

I now understand how much of this game's in the head!! Couldn't hit a ball for toffee, maybe 6 nice shots all afternoon! I did manage to 1 putt the first 2 holes, (par 4's), shame it took 7 to get there, but I did manage to bogey the first par 3. Talk about grinning!! Par 34, hit 69!! It can only get better, still keeping up the lessons, just alongside playing, not instead of...

Anyways, so much for keeping it short! Just wanted to say hello, I'm sure i'll now be asking all sorts of daft questions, so please be patient.
Craig.

PS: My mate who started it all? Hasn't hit a golf ball since.. Still, having a great time with my GF and Ma n' Pa.

Hello Homer, thanks for the reply.

I'm in Sunbury, Middlesex area, and work in Camberley.. Plenty of places to play between the two. I see you're not too far away.

Might be playing another 9 this eve with a work buddy at Pine Ridge? Looks nice (and no water!) from the website... I lost 5 balls in Sunday!! Lakes are magnets for golf balls, are they not?! ('Coz it wasn't my fault they went in the water, obviously!)

Craig.

Fancy a game for a tenner?

I'll give you a shot a hole.

Cheeky!!! Hello Mr Smiffy, thanks for that, a tenner sounds good, it's £13 at my local! (I know what you meant, BTW).

Nice to meet you,
Craig.

Welcome to the forum, good to see you're starting out with lessons.

Thankyou Spoff, I figure this way i've only got myself, (and the weather, and my clubs, and that tree that moved) to blame if I don't get the hang of it eventually!

Craig.

I know Pine Ridge well and you'll enjoy it. There are plenty of pay and plays this way and I'd recommend the Downshire (Wokingham) and Blue Mountain (Bracknell) although both have dreaded water on them. Blue Mountain in particular had been doing some good green fee deals.

NobbyNobbs, of the Ankh-Morpork branch of the family?

watch out for those trees, you've correctly assessed that water is magnetic, well trees are 90% water!

welcome to the strange world of golf. once in, never out!

Welcome to the forum , at all times keep your sense of humour cos theres a bunch of wind up merchants lurking around here ;)

Really?? I'd never have guessed.

BTW Welcome Craig. I'm also a new one on here. It doesn't take long to get involved. :D

Hi Craig,

good to see someone doing it the right way, and so keen.

I wish my wife played, wouldn't have to creep so much to get out then! :)

Welcome aboard. We've all been there. Only took up golf to encourage Mr B to do it - got addicted just as badly myself.
Enjoy!

AliB

Thanks all for such a warm welcome.

Indeed, I'm a massive Pratchett fan, and assuming the name of Nobbs just feels right!

Mr Homer, interestingly enough, about 5 minutes after your post recommending Downshire, my friend announced we couldn't get a convenient tee-time for Pine Ridge, and instead we played the front 8 of Downshire (the 8th being too dark really, shame, as this was my best tee-shot of the lot!).

What a tricky one for such a terrible golfer! Lovely setting, deep rough, big trees, deep bunkers and the dreaded, super-magnetic water! Had great fun tho', my is this game addictive. Can't wait to get out again.

Anyway, thanks again all, will speak again soon I'm sure, when i'll fascinate you all with my tales of mediocrity :o
Craig.
