I've no problem with any OOB that protects a Driving Range/Practice area, especially on 'old' courses! Muirfield might even have an equivalent area - that may or may not disappear during Open Championships. Great hole btw!

Can only think of 2 ATM. My own course Bellshill GC has 2 internal OOB and Easter Moffat GC has 1. All for health and safety reasons.
I'd forgot we had internal OOB at our 2nd hole until Virtuocity hooked 1 miles left, 1st time in 40 years I'd seen anyone go OOB there

Good point. I was particularly interested in "ground that is OOB during the play of one hole only, but would be in play if playing another hole" as backwoodsman suggested but the other answers were helpful.

Our course has a wastewater treatment area on its property within a triangle formed by three holes and protected by six foot metal fencing. Prior to 2019, it was marked as a LWH, ESA (entry prohibited by the environmental authority). In 2019, we changed it to out of bounds, which made it much more consistent as there is 15-20 yards of long, heavy rough from the first cut to the fence. Previously, players would always claim that if they couldn't find their ball, it must be in the LWH. Now it is much more equitable.

That reminds me that one if the clubs I mentioned earlier also had OOB on a par 3 from just in front of the tee to about 50 yards short of the green because it was an SSSI area. Nowhere to lay up as it was trees left and steep banking right with a small pond beyond the OB area too

In which, i can think of one (i play other courses but not many on a frequent basis). 15th at Shirley Park. Longish downhill dogleg par 4, lined by trees on left. Cutting the dogleg by going the direct route over the trees would shorten the hole quite a bit - but you'd be hitting your drive into a blind spot on the previous fairway.

Fair enough, it makes sense. But what about Birkdale? Spieth can be eternally grateful that OOB policy is inconsistent.

It isn't inconsistent! Just 'different' depending on the particular course/competition. There is no danger at Birkdale unless players practicing go collecting their balls - something that, from ancient memory, is not allowed.

My own club (brickendon) has this on our 17th. My nearest other club (panshanger) has it on at least one hole, possibly two.

We have one which was installed after the original design because of the danger of people hitting down the wrong fairway to cut the corner. Was supposed to be removed when the trees grow up ..... still growing!

I believe there is internal Out of Bounds at Hexham between holes 9 & 10, where the course loops back on itself and their is an area of scrub land between the fairway and the tee

There might be an internal OOB around the second tee when The Open is held at the Old Course; there certainly is when The Open is held at Holylake (on no. 3 as played for The Open).

I think you're right; they use the regular 17 and 18 as nos. 1 and 2, regular no. 1 becomes no. 3 and go on from there. There's a berm (called a cop?) of about 4 feet in height that separates the practice area from the holes, OOB stakes are run along the top of the berm.

They mow a foot wide a fairway length strip along the top and have a white line running along it....

I have never been there when it was not set up for the Open. I was lucky to be invited to walk "inside the ropes" a few years ago at the last Open when hosting the England Golf hospitality marquee. Although as a little kid we used to play 'cops and robbers' on there and the Wallasey course.
