watching the Sky golf magazine and then the BMW in Chicago (might have been on that broadcast) where the commentator said that 60% of amateurs from scratch to plus figures were now using a long handled putter

Phil Mickelson was using his well last night- shame really as I've just bought and watched his short game video

I know of about 4 players at my club with long putters.

I play quite a bit in Florida, and have never seen any one with a long putter.

It's tosh, utter tosh.

Why does everyone think it is so unlikely?

Remember where not talking about the average hacker here, we're talking about elite amateurs, who would most likely try anything (and not have to pay to do it!) to get an advantage.

Why does everyone think it is so unlikely?

When "the commentator said that 60% of amateurs from scratch to plus figures were now using a long handled putter" you have to ask: how is he arriving at that figure ?

If he knows 5 scratch+ golfers and 3 use long putters then, ok, 60% of his mates use long putters but he cannot claim that 60% of all top amateurs use them.

If he asked a random, worldwide sample of, say, 1000, and 600 used long putters then the 60% claim would at least have some credible data to support it.

I suspect that like most stats this one has been entirely made up.

The commentator was the Irish sounding guy covering the US golf, he said it was 60% of college players were working with anchored putters.

Cheers

Steve...

Sounds like he was arriving at that figure by looking at the US college circuit.

Was it David Feherty?

I still want to know why everyone thinks its so unlikely?
No one has actually said why they think it's unlikely, just given me a refresher in GCSE statistics!

Thanks Doc
very possibly he made it up or he actually got the stat from US Colleges, you know how anal the yanks are with stats on everything.
However, even if made up its a perception, and perception is reality.
It wasn't long ago they were poo poo'd now they win majors and Phils using one and my hero Freddy Couples

My reasons for saying bollocks are, they don't go as far when you throw them and they don't fit in your locker unless you snap them!! Lol joking.
A. I caddies for a mate at the British open qualifiers last year- don't remember seeing 1 long putter.
B. I play regularly with 2 scratch/plus figure players- neither use long handles
C. I'm quite familiar with a lot of he scratch/county golfers in my area- don't know any that use long handle
D. The top 2 amateurs at the open this year- none of them had long handles.
It may well be true but I just can't see it, I mean that's more than half the scratch golfers in the world- doubtful
Just my opinion though

I played county scratch league golf for several years before i stopped playing,i never met or played against anybody using a long handled putter.
At all the county qualifiers i played in,i never seen anybody using a long handled putter.
I caddied for mate at the midlands assistants champs, and didn't see anybody using a long handled putter.

If it's true then it's very sad.
OK the long putters are legal but many don't agree with them. It does make the putt easier.
If these College Boys are using them already then there's no hope left........

How many Tour Pros are using them now - anyone any idea?
