Intellectual humour

Ok just who on earth is Dave Allen?
a classic Irish comedian, of the 70s and 80s, sat on a high stool with a cigarette and glass of Irish on a side table. Close to the mark, religious and political jokes were his speciality.impeccable timing and dead pan humour.
You were always wondering how he lost half of one of his fingers and had to keep checkin to see which one it was. ;)

A truly great comic in his time.

I used to love it when he had the lights turned down low, it really added to the atmosphere, and boy could he tell a story, as well as making you cry with laughter. :)

Golfmmad.

Baldric: how did the war start sir. Because I heard it was because some bloke called Archie Duke got hungry and shot an ostrich

Blackadder: you mean the Arch Duke if Austro-Hungary got shot

Great thread. Entertaining myself here :D

very definitely a case of one man's meat though

Dave Allen was the alternative comedy of his day, that he was a catholic allowed him to go much further than many others in religious humour - quite a few pope jokes

I also used to like JIm Davidson

couldn't stand Ken Dodd, Harry Hill is vaguely amusing,
Young Ones was very on and off, took me ages to get Ben Elton

My modern day favourite is Eddie Izzard. Absolutely fantastic comedian especially his early stuff.

And the skill involved in performing his whole show in french was pretty impressive.
