I currently have a huge Schott Parka, think Die Hard 2 when they go onto the airport runway. Cracking coat but it is massive. I have noticed a lot of people are now wearing these very thin, lightweight insulated jackets, thinks old fashioned puffa coat but much smaller if people don't know them. Theory is the down in the jacket is incredibly warm and so being huge is unnecessary.

The coat being much smaller is quite appealing, for the car, going in and out of shops, town etc. My parka is great for walking on a winters day but it impractically large at times. I really don't want to compromise on being toasty though.

Anyone have one? Can they really replace my huge parka in the warmth stakes?

Yep, as I said in the Padded Thermal Jacket thread, I have both an Under Armour CGI Reactor jacket. It's excellent, I wear it both playing golf and as a casual jacket. It's toasty warm, very thin and light and doesn't make me look like a michelin man.

I also have an older Stuburt Vapour Jacket last years model which is also good, lovely and warm. I wore it all through last year. I bought the UA one is because it is more comfortable to play in and is lighter and thinner than the Stuburt, maybe even a little warmer.

Either option have served me well and kept me warm through the last two winters.

I did see the thread regarding the golf jackets but posted here as the arms are different on those as they are for golf. The thread did add to the weight of thought that suggests these coats are the way forward.

I've got the RLX 'Pivot' jacket. https://trendygolf.com/products/rlx-ralph-lauren-pivot-down-jacket-french-navy-aw17

It's fully quilted (arms as well as body), it doesn't hinder my golf swing at all, and is the first 'golf' jacket I've owned that I actually wear out socially with jeans etc. It's fantastic.

As far as warmth is concerned, when it's been down to 1 or 2 degrees C, all I've needed to wear under it is a golf shirt. When I wore a jumper under it I was too warm.

Highly recommended, and the price has been slashed at a lot of online sites.

The non-golf versions are great, for all the reasons you mention..

You could get a quality entry level one from Uniqlo by way of dipping your toes, they have handy warmth ness ratings too .

Once you do you'll be both warm AND mobile, and you Parka will seem as ridiculous an idea as golfball finding glasses!!

Sod puffa jackets, they are so 1980's. When was the last time you saw someone in a puffa jacket and thought yeah he looks good in that.
Check out the sale on Pretty green for proper mans jackets, smart and cheap. All you then need is a few accessories, gloves, scarf and balaclava 👍

Interesting comments. Like LT I thought these jackets were too lightweight to be warm. I might need to check them out. Thanks fellas.

I've got a couple of faux fur lined soft shell jackets (Regatta Cato) bought off ebay used for both leisure and golf. Very snug!

I bought North Face jacket and gilet. Thin as a thin thing thats very thin. Works brilliant. And as I'm excessively cuddly, the big puffy style makes me look like marshmallow man in Ghostbusters.

Got a down puffa for sale in Trespass recently around £60. Has a 700 insulation score which is high enough, any higher and it's too hot for all but the very coldest UK days. Beauty of them is the weight and ability to be squashed into a bag. Can even be used as a layer under a shell for extra insulation.
You dont have to go North Face or Rab or Mountain Equipment to get quality. Stuff a fancy brand badge, as long as it works.

Some would argue go for primaloft imsualtion (synthetic and more water resistant) for the UK and whilst it may be better suited to activities like mountain biking or climbing, the natural goose down is better looking and comfier imo for general everyday wear as long as weather's not too wet.

Just bought myself a Jack Wolfskin jacket from Cotswold Outdoors. Good price in the sale and I'm very happy. Ironically the temperature has gone up, blowing a gale mind, so I might not be able to fully test it for a day or two.

Thanks for the advice folks.

I bought a Jack wolfskin coat last year. A 3-1 coat. If it is similar get a fleece which zips into said coat. It transforms the coat.

Different type but I know what you mean. Mine is one of the thin insulated jackets, imagine a puffer jacket from the 80's with 90% of the fill removed but just as warm. I can wear a fleece or jumper under if it is really cold but it does not zip in to the main jacket.

Jack Wolfskin are a strong brand, cracking quality.
