Have a read of the below and discuss. i will bullet point the major parts, the question slightly tongue in cheek, but "Should London be an independent state?"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-21934564

- London had a recession, but it didn't last long. Its economy grew by nearly 12.5% between 2007 and 2011 - twice as fast as the rest of the UK. And the property market barely stopped either.

-London's top ten boroughs alone are worth more, in real estate terms, than all the property of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, added together.

- The Office for National Statistics reckons that the average Londoner contributes 70% more to Britain's national income than people in the rest of the country

Before one of the passionate Scots beats me to it; the rest of England would be a lot worse off were it to happen. Moreso than Scotland would be worse off out of the UK.

In 10+ years, if big businesses like the BBC continue the trend of moving headquarters to other cities like Manchester / Birmingham / Liverpool etc the effect may not be as bad. But, as things currently stand, anyone outside the M25 would be in serious trouble!

the main reason London benefits is a labour force & a ready made market from the rest of the UK. We'd all be economic immigrants sponging off your state & taking your jobs :D

how many people who work in London are actually from London ?

as for Scotland. let them go. We could cast them adrift & they could float up to Iceland !!

Given the way the world is going, I think we're better off sticking together to have a bigger voice rather than splitting into smaller states/countries.

We haven't thought this through!!! That's it vote cancelled!

we should start a new thread (or just hijack this one) of what we would miss about our scottish brothers.

I for one would miss their sunny, cheery disposition

If London went I'd miss nothing !! not even Eastenders

Salaries are really messed up in this country, especially so down south.
Take a colleague for example, he has been offered a job in London, doing almost exactly the same job he is doing up here, no extra work, no more hours, nigh on the same role.....the london company are willing to pay an extra £20K+ a year. Which would top his wage up to £51k...

There is a very good reason for that... what is the average house price in Wakefield or average rent? then look at London prices... then look at the other parts of cost of living...

In fact taken from BBC:

Wakefield average price: £136680
London Average price: £445651

Exactamundo which makes him worse off in London imo.

why would you choose to live somewhere that charges you extra for everything just because you earn more......

I feel a new Billy Connolly song coming on.......London Weighting [calling]

You would not last a year without our whisky, water and electricty.

Can you believe this stoopid new yankee spell check system on here is telling me I have spelled whisky rong.
I now feel a rant coming on.

Now you can apologise for correcting me yesterday! It wasn't me it was that ********* spell-check.

A couple of my daughters friends have bought houses in London suburbs.
They are massively in debt, maxed out on their credit cards and totally trapped by negative equity.
Another friend took a £140k hit when selling.
If they had decent houses you could understand but they are just pokey wee places that would sell for less than £75k where I live.
I feel so sorry for them.
