Improve driver distance NO NOT TO 300 Yards +

It's whether you're prepared to put in some work and perhaps have lessons to find out how to generate that clubhead speed, - I'd suggest finding a Pro who you get on with, and set to with him to work on it.

Hope that helps.

Hit it better hit it further.

If you can hit it straight you can play close to par golf on a good day. It's probably possible to play to par, but that needs a little luck on the longest holes (like a single putt par) and some birdies.

If what you're saying is that you can now rely on regularly driving about 200yds onto the short stuff - think yourself lucky and spend time practicing your short game & putting!

An extra 20 yds on straight drives aint likely to impact more than 2/3 shots per round but an extra 20 yards into trouble is! :)

To improve distance I've been working on retaining the lag in my swing right through to impact. I was told by a pro at the Belfry that alot of amateurs lose upto 20mph from the bottom of the downswing through to impact.

See how the club is right over his left leg after impact. Mine was, until recently hand insdie leg, clubhead outside leg.

That pro was absolutely right about lag but imo that "tip" of telling someone they need to try and retain lag until just before impact has been the breaking of more swings than it has the making...

Lag is not a CAUSE of power in the swing but a RESULT of other movements in the swing sequence of a POWERFUL SWING. What I mean is, lag isnt the thing to focus on, there are other things to look at earlier on in the swing sequence that create lag automatically.

The lag is one of the last parts of my swing re-build.
I used to have a very flat swing which necessitated the flick of the wrist to get the club somewhere near square (normally giving a big draw) or else it would push/slice terribly.
Since my lessons begun I have improved my swing an incredible amount and my handicap has come down from 10 in a couple of years (and I don't practice or play a huge amount).
So I am now just trying to remove the flick to create a better strike angle and am working on clearing my left hip rather than coming over the top of the ball which can lead to hooks and low slices.

JB Holmes has very little lag yet still produces monster power, thus proving that there's more than one way to hit a ball over an 18m fence from 220 yards with 90% balls and into a breeze.

JB Holmes on Power

JB Holmes has lots of lag... He just has no wrist cock at the top of his swing. He just creates his lag a lot later than everyone else.

Someone like Sergio creates their lag a lot earlier than JB because his wrists cock hugely at the top of his backswing. Sergio then retains the lag due to the speed of his turn. His method is very repeatable for him but the reason why hes not as long as JB is because his extreme wrist cock makes his arc smaller than JBs. JBs physical power enables him to turn quickly, while retaining the bigger arc in his swing.

Bigger arc= more speed, hence why (all things being equal) a longer shaft will go further than a shorter on. Which is also why all the big golf companies now sell 46 inch long drivers when they know that for 95% of golfer a shorter shaft would be better for them overall.

Thanks for all the posts and thoughts guys its given me something to think about.

One thing is its thanks to Bobs headcover drill that the slice is now a fade on more than one occasion. I still need to work a lot on accuracy but was also trying to get a tiny bit more controlled distance....so thanks for not turning the thread into a stupid 400yrd thread :D

However after I have just read an email from a PGA coach that I sign up to because there are offers on a local course.....I am very up set so look out for my new post about the Fade I have developed
