I know we've been spolit in the past with tv comedies like Porridge, the Good life, Blackadder, Dads Army, Fools and horses, Vicar of Dibley, and Fawlty Towers to name just a few but I'm struggling to find any new sit-coms coming through as future classics.

Unless you know better?

Motherland. Best proper comedy series on TV in YEARS !!!!
 
Must be my age, but most of it is awful....weak scripts, poor delivery and predicatable. I can't think of one current comedy worth watching. I just googled best current tv comedy and got this. Two of them are ressurected (Birds of a Feather was horrendous frst time round!!) the rest, pretty poor....

But TV is filled with talent shows and fake celebs sitting around saying "literally" a lot... so little chance of getting something that costs money to produce commissioned.

I think decent British comedy has died a death. We had the likes of Porridge, Fools and horses, Blackadder, Game on and Coupling. Now we have such a PC mindset that anything close to the bone is pulled for fear of offending someone.

Modern comedy just isn't that funny and has been replaced by all the reality crap we now have to suffer.
 
Big Bang ran out of steam five series ago. It needs to be killed off. I recently started Brooklyn Nine-Nine after missing it when it first started and it's pretty good.

The best are still Friends, Peep Show and the US Office for me, all have almost infinite rewatch potential but Friends is a nostalgic one for me, as I grew up with it being THE big comedy. The last series of Peep Show was poor, too, but doesn't sully what came before.

Gervais nails it time after time so hopefully his new work will be excellent.

I find Gervais hit and miss. I actually didn’t like the UK office, mainly because of him. I couldn’t decide if he was playing a part, or actually that’s just how he is. At least with Steve Carrell you know it’s an act.

David Brent is one of the best written/acted parts in TV history, imo, exactly because you can't tell - it's so utterly believable in its own incredible way. I'm sure many of us have worked with or for Brent-like characters, even though he is an extreme for comedy's sake.

What about the serious stuff that he includes in shows like Extras and (especially) Derek? The man has an amazing knack of capturing the best in human spirit even when much of the surrounding act is comedic.
 
You missed out Peep Show, IT Crowd and Father Ted from your list, which are newer than most of the ones you said - although not really new since they've all finished now. Those three are all classics though. I could rewatch them any number of times.

In terms of what's actually on now, and UK-based, I'm not sure. We might be experiencing a bit of a lull. My favourite comedies that they're still making tend to me American shows, Brooklyn Nine Nine and Always Sunny in Philadelphia for example. Then again I don't always catch the new UK stuff because it'll be on E4 or BBC2 or something rather than Netflix.

IT Crowd is great. I find Father Ted hasn't stood the test of time as well but it's still up there.

I used to love that show, until they replaced Jeff with some other bloke who was rubbish. The first two or three series were superb though.
