...for my daughter.
Nothing amazing, it will be for college work, hopefully Uni stuff in a couple of years and whatever teenage girls do on laptops these days, preferably under £300.
The Lenovo Ideapad 320S seems to get lots of nods as does the HP 15.6, there's also a cheaper Lenovo Ideapad 120S with a 64Gb HDD.

Advice required please, I've discovered it's an absolute minefield when trying to buy one o_O

Fragger will be along at somepoint, until then, if you can get one with a SSD then do, make sure its portable if it needs to be then memory then processor for me.

Have a Lenovo that has been fine albeit at 15" not overly portable

Thanks mate, was thinking of around a 14" screen and Windows 10, there's just so much choice lol.
I see there are some with 32Gb hard drives now, what the heck is the point of that?

external/cloud storage mean you dont actually have to store much on the machine these days

Do not whatever you do get a laptop with less than 250 gb hard drive size

The ones with 32 and 64 are cheap and fast , but will fill up incredibly quickly after a couple of chunky windows updates.

A 500gb SSD drive now costs about £65 , I’d buy a bog standard laptop with a spinning hard drive and Chuck a SSD in it, replacing the original hdd .
Even a moderate processor with 4 gb ram will fly with an SSD

Feel free to PM me with any questions or if you find something and want an opinion 👍

Whilst SSDs are good

Good ? ...........GOOD?
They’re fabulous darling ( oh no , I’ve gone all Craig Revel - Horwood )

Apologies 😂

Having replaced many 4 year old hard drives with SSD with a wide mix of processors, I can’t think of one that hasn’t revitalised the machine and extended it’s working life by 3 or 4 years .

They are the best thing to happen to computers since SSD drives 👍😎

I suppose it depends on what you are meaning when you say SSD. M.2 pci-e V-NAND is a while new ball game but I assune you meant a 2.5 SATA SSD as that's a bit more common.

They are good but the M.2 pci-e I have in my HP Omen is GOOD.

What about a chromebook? My son got one through his school in 6th form, they recommended them. It saw him through his A levels and he is still using it at university. We asked him if he needed an upgrade and he said no.

If you go standard the I'd follow Fraggers advice. We recently put an ssd into our very slow laptop and it has made it usable again.
