Don't expect any help or sympathy, but I needed to get that off my chest.

I'm really pleased with what I've achieved this year so far ( with lots of help from JoUK, to be sure ), and whilst every part of my game is still well below what I'd like it to be, I can still hold my own, and stonewall my end, when it comes to handicap.

Except with the driver. That thing is capable of ruining a round all on it's own

Hate the damned thing.

Rant over.

PS I'll report back when the big dog starts behaving itself.

Apart from the putter, a driver is the easiest club to hit, don't understand why folks struggle to hit the ball with one. It's 460 cc with a huge very forgiving hitting area. :D

Just stop trying to kill the ball, get it forward in the stance, tee it high and swing a bit easier, you'll time it better and the ball will go straighter and longer. :D

i feel your pain m8, but its true, you dont gotta hit a driver hard, just swing smooth, and it will go way out there, heres something to take your mind off it, ive just been hit with a rather large dose of the unmentionables!!! at least your not doing that....gawd i hate the arthur j's!

Power slice? :D

I also feel the pain.
Like most of the time there is part of your game that struggles and the rest seems adequate then suddenly it flips and role reverses.
A month ago the fairway was almost unmissable and irons were just missing. Now for a month later I might as well throw the ball down the fairway as it's the only way I'll get near it.
But low and behold.... The last 2 rounds have shown slight promise and fairways are being hit a bit more often...

What a game this golf lark is....!!!!! :) keep going...!!!! :)

For weeks I couldn't drive at all. Blocks right, huge slices and snap hooks. Anywhere but straight. However for the last few rounds including under a bit of pressure on Monday and in competition last night its actually turned around. Now my irons off the fairway are misbehaving and I can't get out of bunkers but who said it was easy.

Try and relax. Maybe try humming as you swing or breathing out as you hit it. Both are suppose to relax you. And don't try and kill it. It will come back so be patient

Have you ever tried practicing what you preach Homer. It sounds good advice.

I'm not going to feel you pain. I refuse to. :)

Maybe you should follow the RG plan and not actually practice with your driver. Groove your swing, find your tempo and let the great shots fly on the course. It's all in the mind. If it's not - go and get help.

Listen closely Renee, I shall say this only once.

If a 4 iron isn't enough to reach, hit a 3.
If a 9 iron isn't enough to reach, hit a 8.
If a driver isn't enough to reach, tough. Dont try.

Most of us here know how far we hit each club..roughly.
So, we try and hit the club for that yardage,
When hitting the driver, we try and hit it further and further as the round goes on.

I suggest you go out on a calm dry day and hit a few drivers on a flat hole.
Measure how far the average ball went and that's your driver distance.
In future, try and hit it only that distance (unless its up/down hill wind with/against.
So, learn how to hit your driver a cetain distance and stick with it.

All well and good.

But

I only ever manage to hit my driver 145 yards into the right rough.

And that's when I middle it.

The miss hits don't even go that far.

:o

Re Bob's point about trying too hard with the driver, our 12,13,14 holes confirm his point for me.

13,14 very long par fours and they are my best two holes for scoring.

Hole 12 is an easy par four that I can reach if I 'middle' the drive...and therein is the problem. In trying for distance I go all out of synch and end up in the crap, play a provisional ball just to land on the fairway and hey, ho, the second ball is on/around the green. Most weeks this hole is a problem for me despite being circa stroke index 16, just because I try that wee bit harder with an eagle in my thoughts!!

Maybe for you less is more - less effort, more consistancy until the magic returns.
