Ho, ho, ho......baa humbug!

Never heard anything so utterly crazy.

Silly gits.....whatever next, let-us-fit-your-footjoys.com

For fecks sake....if you can't choose a ball yourself.....ask your pro, he'll flog you a nice pack of Titleist that'll be just the ticket, for no extra charge.

Whoaa! We all appear to have our ultra-cynical Monday morning hats on today, don't we!
Now I don't know who ColinR is and whether he represents said company, but I do know that a great many golfers play with golf balls that don't spin at the right rate for the way they play their game. Go for a Titleist fitting and they'll be just as keen to find the right ball for your game as they are clubs - in some ways costing themselves because there are huge numbers of people out there playing Pro V1s that would be better off with less expensive NXTs or even SoLos.
I do wonder whether just sometimes the GM forumers are just a little too cynical for their own good...

Some of the balls out there must suit someone, other wise we would all be playing proVs and they wouldn't make anything else.

Not sure I'd like a web site to tell me my ideal ball is the Noodle ice though, prefer to be told by someone within punching distance.

I think I'm with furyk on this one. The balls that I find in greatest number are Titleist ProV's. Now this either represents their popularity or the fact that a lot that are using them can't control them (I find a lot of TopFlites and Pinnacles too).
That said I'd rather ask a human.

Re: http://www.golfballselector.com

The day a golfer needs to be told what ball to use is the day they should just stick to yellow pinnacle golds.
If you have a handicap at all then you will know if you want to use a spinner or a distance or a mid table ball. The fact is that most peopple start with bricks and as they improve, start to use better balls which are a little trickier to control, ie making the ball spin to a stop instead of bouncing onto the green.
Not cynical as such, just amazed that it would take a website to tell someone they need a specific branded ball.

Personally I think there are a lot of people out there who play "premium" balls due to a sort of "golf snobbery". I bet if you made a group of 10 players hit balls blindfolded, they'd struggle to tell a good budget ball from a top-end model (if they could make contact at all!)
Thanks for your time.

Re: http://www.golfballselector.com

with irons prov1''s and Callaway Hx tours feel totally different and react differently to spin than harder balls, no snobbery, they are a common make so to me that is the opposite. Its not like you can only receive these balls if you play of a single figure or that they cost £XXX pounds per ball, they are just a golfballs pure and simple, just better than some others.

I stick my hand in my bag, pull out a few, go for the one with the least scuffs and bosh the thing. I don't buy all this spin stuff (to improve your game). For me, not too hard is the only thing I'm interested in. Having said all this, I wouldn't choose any ball that had high spin characteristics, if that's what you mean!! If folks who basicaly don't hit it straight are going for posh balls with lots of spin (to match the milled wedges) then they are pretty silly....

I've got in my bag Srixon blue, Callaway warbird, some Nike ones and the odd NXT tour. NO yellow pinnacles.....shame!

Ill take that bet!! have you ever tried this with say a Wilson Staff Dx2 and a top flite or similar crap?

This website is utter sh*t a sleeve of balls is only a few quid, and a chat with your local pro or mate costs naff all, just ask to try out a ball from them etc

Re: http://www.golfballselector.com

Well spotted Jim.

High spin ball = potentialy more trouble off the tee, so, yes in that context I avoid this type of ball (with the intention of improving my game!!)
I was referring more to all the other stuff, trajectorys, "feel" etc. My best rounds were played with Titleist pts, Palmer "Bay Hill" Titanium and Bridgestone. None of these are similar (to my knowledge), apart from the fact that they are not tour/pro balls.

It's like saying I don't believe in car engine technology, but I know that diesel is going to be cheapest on a long journey. a little confused, it's true.

you're way off with this one, brendy
any less experienced golfer ought to get advice on balls just as much as on any other part of his armoury. There are so many variations that it's too easy to get something totally unsuitable, either something with too high a spin rate as Dave suggests or a donnay brick.
