How Often Would You Change Your Irons

I dont tend to change very often but when I do, I experiment with a few different types.
I had a set of RAC LT2's and Maxfli Revolutions when I joined my club in 06, bought a new set of AP2's in 2008, kept them until November past when I bought a second hand set of Mixzuno MP37's. Long irons are no problem, I am having consistency problems with the shorter irons (pushes and lack of normal distance randomly), I had the lie adjusted for me after a session on the strike boards etc.

With the adjustments made, I shot a 78 in windy conditions on Saturday inc a daft penalty self imposed on the second hole but think its time to move them on for something a little more forgiving and have just had another set of Maxfli Revolutions delivered this morning. Trying to decide whether to keep these or take on a set of Titleist 710 CB's that I can get my hands on. Once I have made my mind up though, I get rid of all other clubs and only ever have a spare wedge as Im not a "naughty step" type person, its me that hits the clubs badly at times, not the clubs fault at all.

Bought my current set about 5 yrs ago and previous set in 1985. I only changed because shafts in my Wilson Staffs were dead and my pro told me technology had moved on 'just a bit' since the Staffs came on the scene so worth looking at a new set.

No thoughts of changing my irons at the moment as for me how well I play and score depends on me rather than my clubs.

last week i received my new irons. played my old ones nearly 10 years (June 2004 to April 2014). really like my new sticks in particular the graphite shafts with which i gained 10 to 15 yards compared to my old irons. i'll keep you informed whether my scores improve as well

Don't change irons that often as I don't think technology develops as quickly as is the case for woods and they are much more involved in feel shots - why change something you are comfortable with.

Had current 695's for around 9 years, I think, and don't fancy changing them anytime soon. My swing remains the same and I don't care that the grooves on the 6 iron downwards have been flattened out - they still do what I want when I make the right swing. Even though they were custom fitted, I took a long time to feel truly comfortable with them and see no point to changing. Cheaper to keep regripping them also...

The only thing I did think about was whether the shafts might begin to lose their effectiveness over time?

Yes they do. But the time period is very long - 15 years or so!

I've only used my current set for a year or so, but see no reason to change. Had 1 set (albeit several sets in different places) for 6-8 years before that and previous set for 4 years. Irons and my putter are the stable parts of my bag, though that doesn't mean they can be complacent!

i probably change on average every season, for no other reason than something catches my eye and i just fancy the change. i get the same specs but get them off ebay and resell the previous.

I would go along with most views on here, want and need are two different things, if im changing its always at the end of the season so I can get plenty of practice in over the winter.

Current set of MP60s in the bag for 6-7 years and no plans to change anytime soon as it's not the clubs holding me back! I have only owned 3 sets of irons come to think of it in the last 20 years - Dunlop Powerflow, Mizuno T Zoid XV Oversize and the MP60s

Cheers for all the views guys interesting reading.

Thinking I might hold on till end of summer get another fitting see what's changed if anything and go for there.

If see good results on the computer and like the feel of the irons I may buy then as pointed out above give me then the winter to fine tune them. Hopefully pick up a better deal as well end of season

Change irons when...

They wear out
You lose confidence in them
Your swing has changed so your spec has changed
You just damn well feel like it!!!!!

or any combination of the above.

This for me,

Cannot see that the 825 pros cannot take you to any handicap. I do not feel think would hold you back.

I'm sure when thy were released there was the odd tour pro who used them and they are equivalent to I20's imho

I keep reading them pesky golf magazines so when I managed to have a bunch of spare cash I start believing their stories and get the itch for a change - not sensible or logical but can be a bit of fun.

Swing Spec Changes and Confidence definitely agree. I don't think the confidence lies so much in the club more in your head!

Once every 2 years?

The 800s pros I have. The feeling I have now is maybe the shafts are not 100% for me now also got 1degree flat. Think my swing is better than ever been, hitting the ball a lot harder now as wel. Tho will see how things look come seasons in.
