Hey guys just out of interest would often would you change your irons?

Would you change every few years to keep up with new tech?
Or
Change cause you think new irons will make the ball go further or spin more?
Etc

Been toying with the idea myself, started at 25 hc with a set of ping g2's always felt I played well with them in fact took 10 shots off from 2007 till 2011.

Then got custom fit stiff flex and 1deg flat, now here I am about to drop to single figures and thinking of going for a new set again.

Thing is like the g2's at the minute I am hitting the irons well but at the time I changed from them to current sticks (jpx pros) it was a instant Improvement almost, tho would I find that again with new irons and a fresh custom fit as in my head I feel I don't hit the ball no longer like a 15hc golfer,

Cheers for all the views in advance

Its a question of whether you 'need' to change for better performance etc. or whether you 'want' or fancy a change and so you end up convincing yourself that new irons will be better.

I suspect that since you have the thought in your mind you won't be happy until you've bought new irons - tis a simply a matter of whether you make a logical or, be honest and, let yourself make an emotional decision.

Do what will make you most content and happy!

Tricky one.

These irons are getting you down from 13 into single figures. Some might ask why you'd risk this good form by changing irons- especially at this time of year.

However, as you've said, you have experience of seeing instant improvements when buying new irons- what's to say it won't happen again.

My thoughts are that it's YOU who is doing the improving, not the clubs you're holding. If you want a new set of irons, go for it BUT DON'T SELL THE OLD ONES!

Get a proper fit with a launch monitor but don't rely 100% on the numbers- go for feel, looks and comfort.

Fitting can help straighten out shots, provide more forgiveness for off-centre strikes, increase distance, improve dispersion. You've not mentioned any of these things. All you've mentioned is handicap, handicap, handicap.

So I guess the question is, do you know what would bring down your handicap and are you really sure that it's improved iron play?

I do not change for performance improvements (I have never found any club that has done that) I change because I have found something I like the look of more than what I currently have. A bit shallow but ultimately If I like the look of something I find it hard to resist.

Personally I doubt you'll see a big improvement over the jpx pros, they're a pretty recent model and were fitted so should be pretty well suited. Maybe if you got down to 6/7 then look again but int the scheme of things there isn't a lot between a 15 and 10 capper, in terms of how they hit the ball.

Your jpx are one year newer than mine with regards to release date, I went for a CF this year and despite trying offerings fro most brands I couldn't find anything I hit better than my current babies...... This includes i20, i25, s56, s55, mp63, mp64, fg62

Will be at least 5 years for this set of irons I expect, maybe more. Not sure technology in irons is changing much and love what I have currently. Now putters......

Change irons when...

They wear out
You lose confidence in them
Your swing has changed so your spec has changed
You just damn well feel like it!!!!!

or any combination of the above.

Thus far 6 or 7 years has been my average for no other reason than I fancied new shinies. I guess you could call it a 7 year itch

I changed to my new set of Mizunos after having my Clevelands for 3 years. My new set will be with me until they break or I get damn good and can shape a ball at will.

So my current set will be lasting me a long long time :)

I've had mine for nearly 2 and a half years. I am looking to buy new irons due to improved ball striking, as my set runs outs at 5. Otherwise I wouldn't be contemplating new irons for performance gains.

Only change your set if your swing has massively changed, skill, or they are well and truly shot to dead.

Had my current set for 3 years - tried some new irons recently - was seeing no improvement so no need to purchase any new irons

Would only change if they gave considerable improvement on the course

More than happy with my I25's and don't see any reason to change. However, never say never and the lure of the shiny can strike at any time

Oh God no.....don't put us through another CF/club change saga.

Had my irons for 8 years and was considering new ones last year at the same time as a mate was getting new ones as well. Both went together and tried out a variety but found nothing that performed any better than what I already had.

The only thing I did think about was whether the shafts might begin to lose their effectiveness over time?

My view, FWIW, is about every 6 or so years.

I was fitted for my 63's at the start of last year and haven't looked at another set since.

When these are battered beyond recognition, I'll still have to really think about getting another set, and even then I'd probably get the same set

In all seriousness, iron tech hasn't moved on considerably in years so every 5-6 years seems about right IMO.

Had my s57's for 4 years and they still have loads of life left. But knowing the shaft isn't right gets into your head when the shot really matters. Hopefully the new clubs will be in use for a good few years. ( until the s54's are released at least )

Got my AP's second hand and can't see me changing for a few more "seasons"

But I will if I feel a custom fit/new irons would warrant a change as my swing becomes more stable

(They are the only thing I've not changed since I started playing golf)
