I've seen him easily collar a 7 iron 170 so 135 with a wedge? Piece of pish

Less is definitely more in my view. If you try too hard you can muck up your coordination and end up losing power.

homer, can you stop you obsession with yardages. In all honestly I don't think 135 is far for a wedge. I'm about 120-125 for a wedge and I'm not a big hitter at all, average joe if I'm being honest. 135 is not unreasonable for a wedge in my opinion.
Anyway, back on track I think this is a pointless thread. I always commit 100% to every shot. That doesn't mean I hit every shot with 100% effort. To swing full out every time would knacker my back in a month!

You've just proved why it isn't a pointless thread in your statement. I created the post to hopefully highlight it's not all about hitting it as hard as you possibly can which you see a lot of golfers do. As you state committing 100% doesn't mean hitting it 100%. That second figure is the key one.
I know when I first started playing golf I always tried to hit it far too hard and got back into the same routine these last few months.
Hopefully this thead has helped someone new to the game that there is a difference in giving 100% commitment and 100% effort in the shot.

A few years ago I used to play a lot of golf with a guy called Neil Dawes (not that that would mean anything to anybody on here!).
He had a lovely swing and could hit the ball bloody miles. Eventually got down to 8 handicap but has had to give up because of back problems.
He used to hit everything flat out. And I mean everything!
If he had 110-120 yards to go he would rather hit a sand iron 120% than a PW at 90%. He used to hit it really well but missed a lot of greens. Now I'm not a brilliant golfer by any stretch of the imagination but even I could see that if he was more controlled, took slightly more club and hit a bit easier he would make more greens in regulation. He tried it. He liked it. His handicap came down fairly quickly from what was 12 to his best of 8. He never did say "thank you!"

Is it really possible to swing with 100% effort?? I don't think it is and yet still be stood upright after the swing.
If I ever have to hit a shot really hard to try to get one up quick over trees or something, it still has to be under some form of control or I'm just not going to get the desired result.
I'd say that kind of thrash would be around 90-95% so I'd guess I must swing "normally" somewhere around 80-85%.

If I SWING at 70% of the tempo I'm physically capable of then I get no more distance than a 100% tempo swing and my dispersion is far worse - go figure.
There's a guy who's just come back from the states after 3 years there and tries to smash the dimples off of everything. He hits the ball an absolute mile but it as accurate as a Labour Party manifesto! Played a greensomes event with him and on every hole with the driver we ended up taking my tee shot for him to play the approach as not once was he any better than the 2nd cut!

People who hit it even further than that have their hands far more forward at impact thus compressing the ball more, delofting the club and generating more distance and spin than those of us who don't. Considering from your swing videos how your head moves up and down more and quicker than a hooker's on a work night I'd quit bleating about other people's yardages. To say it's becoming tiresome is an understatement.
Surely the point of this thread would be to deternmine at what percentage of your maximum swing speed can you attain your best distance to dispersion ratio?

thanks, thats exactly it, i have had my hands way forward on all my irons until my last lesson.

Who knows how much more I've got. If I try to swing harder than I do it goes horribly wrong. I certainly feel like I could give it more but it's all in the timing.

135yds is a long way to carry a wedge. I need 9 iron to get there even in the height of summer and I'm not a short hitter. Of course if you're talking 15 yards of bounce and roll I can get there easy

I feel colossally educated now. Phew....and I thought I was insightful.
Given x = 1 and y = 1, then
x = y
Multiplying each side by x,
x2 = xy
Subtracting y2 from each side,
x2 - y2 = xy - y2
Factoring each side,
(x + y)(x - y) = y(x - y)
Dividing out the common term, (x - y) results in
x + y = y

I don't see 135 as unreasonable with a pw. The shaft is short, you can lash it easily, the spin keeps it straight. If pw distance equated to driver distance, I would be hitting 400 plus. But it doesn't. My short irons are stupid long compared to the longer irons in the bag.
