Has developed only recently. Increases in intensity & lasts for 10 secs or so each time it fires up.
Have bled the top radiator in the house & taken a litre or so of water through.
Any other suggestions welcome.

Could be due to limescale/sludge buildup in the system. You could try draining it, refilling and adding a descaling agent, run again for the recommended period, drain and flush through then refill with an inhibitor added.

Further examination reveals it's more of a pipe 'rattle' that seems to settle down a few minutes after c/h start-up.
Yeah been many years since I had the system 'flushed'.... how often you need that? May start there.
