....is a GIMME?

simple question really, although i guess the answer differs quite a bit, but how close to the hole has the ball to be before you tell you partner/oppenent to pick it up?

If you are playing with Smiffy, not even when it's at the bottom of the cup. It depends on whether its a proper match or not. In a competitive game it depends on the score, etc but I tend to see a few in to start and then give a couple from around a two feet and then get them to putt one again. Certainly down the stretch I tend not to give too much.

In a friendly anything within a putter length (not broom handle or belly) is usually good enough

depends on the position of the ball and how close the match is (even my friendly games have a good competitive edge). Generally within a putter lenght is good enough for me but if someone has missed a sitter or 2 or the put is a nasty downhiller or across the break then I will see it in.

In our groups games we have now started putting everything out. It avoids arguments, because one mans "gimme" is another mans missed putt. At least it levels the playing field for everyone. I missed a putt at Forest Pines last week that could have only been 3" from the hole. How I laughed....

If we are playing matchplay then we will still have gimmes. But not in Stableford.

6" tops.

Saw a 1" putt missed last year. Left it short. One inch!

didn't know whether to laugh or cry at this. How the he'll did they manage that????? Did they actually hit the ball? :o

He stood with his feet about 4 feet apart, trying to avoid two other peoples lines, and as he swung at it, toppled backwards, and topped the ball half a roll forwards. Not enough to hole it though. Laugh? Oh yes, we did. For ages.

No set distance, it depends on the player, the situation in the match, the green conditions, slope etc. Generally if I think it's a more or less nailed on certainty they are going to knock it in I'll give it. Friendly games perhaps a bit more generous.
