How can two small chages make such a difference?

..... And not the changes you would think

When it comes to putting, I've always been pretty good. Last seasons average was a shade over 31 PPR. I decided that after a run in the middle of the season of 30,29,28,29,30 that there were quite a few more strokes I could lose, simply through putting better and holing out more.

During my last lesson my pro made a very slight change in my set up to get my hands more level with the ball. This has shown some iprovement, but has always felt uncomfartable mainly because of two things....

... So I decided to change things up.

Firstly - Ball position - Off my own back, decided to move my ball position about a ball, ball and a half width back from where I usually played it. My stock spot for ball position was just off my left heel, whith a narrow'ish stance.

Secondly - Change of grip - No, not how I hold the club, the actual rubber at the top of the club. I had a SuperStroke mid slim 2.0 fitted as I and my pro felt I would benefit from a bigger grip.

For a month or two, it appeard to help, but I always struggled with the feel of the grip in my hands. I couldn't feel the distance I needed to make when lagging the ball up to the hole. The grip originally felt comfortable through the stroke, but after a time, it became a little cumbersome and more of a hinderance if I'm being honest.

So, again off my own back, I decided to try a few standard size grips. Eventually settled on a grip I played, and liked before, from the Iomic range.

Took my Scotty to my pro on Thursday to have it fitted, he did query me. Asking if I was sure I wanted a change as I've been putting well of late.

After a chat, he agreed that any doubt when stood over a putt is counterproductive, and fitted the Iomic to my putter. I'd also like to point out the Iomic medium is smaller than the stock Pistolero grip on the Del Mar.

Practiced with the new grip and ball positon Friday and Saturday and, even after first impressions, the putter feels much more comforatble to hold and my stroke feels much more stable than with the previous grip, even though the new grip is massively smaller (Go figure ) .

I was so looking forward to playing Saturday, but caught a bug from somewhere, probably little mans nursery friends on Saturday which saw me sidelined for the entire day.

I managed to make it to the practice area Sunday morning and the difference in my putting compared to how it was, was literally night and day :D

Even the first few putts as straight out of the bag were better. Where usually it would take me quite a bit of time to pick up the speed of the greens, I felt I could pick them up a lot, lot quicker. Lag putting was also markedly improved, probably being down to me judging the pace of the greens and feeling the distance better.

In short, after all that, thicker grips aren't always the answer to putting woes, it'sprobably something else in your set up casuing issue.

i think you are right on the big grip theory gareth, people see the press and the marketing and assume its a quick fix for them, On my old TM putter i put on a two thumb grip and i thought it was great!

Got my new putter with a standard size grip and it is actually so much better. but quite often, any change can feel immediately better just because its different! only time will tell if its really improved things as we all have good and bad days with the putter!

While I agree with feeling better, I tend to go by results.

If it feels horrendous to start, but gets the job done, I'll adapt to it, the same as any swing change really. You know yourself, when making a change, it can take hundreds, if not thousands of balls before it starts to feel more natural.

I think, for me, with the SuperStroke grip, I was trying to force a change in an area that wasn't the cause of my issue. I've never been a wristy putter, so the only benefit of the bigger grip was comfort, which, if I'm being honest, after some time felt more cumbersome than comfortable.

The changes to my set up have yeilded the biggest improvements so far, and by a marked distance.

You need to spend 5+ hours on the range to make changes, quick fixes don't work apparently...
