Home conmputing help please

I'd say yes. The guy has sold 59 but got no feedback.

Due to the tsunami/earthquake in japan the price of hdd have rocketed. I got an 80gb CnM core for £20, they are now £35.

I'd suggest taking a look at the CnM core hdd's as they are still pretty cheap and mine has been brilliant. It doesn't need an external power source either?

Check eBay daily deals, they often have 1Tb HDD's for £60ish.

Re: Home computing help please

I've had several (at least 3) external HDDs over the last few years which were cheapish, although not as cheap as the ebay item you mentioned. All failed within a year or so. One was replaced under warranty and the replacement failed too. One just died completely, no power. One would start up and go "click-click-click" repeatedly but then do nothing else. Maybe I am just unlucky?

In the end I bought a Synology Diskstation NAS which is fast reliable and works. Not cheap but worth every penny and has two disks with RAID striping (could be the wrong word, I'm a software guy not a hardware guy) which means that if one disk fails your data is still retained.

Re: Home computing help please

The My Book is a good hard disk. No worries there. No hard disks are immortal, but you should get a couple of years from a decent one. Backing up to the Cloud is also worth considering. Dropbox is a good service to consider.

Presumably there is customs and duty to pay on this one, coming in from HK. There is also the question of whether it is genuine or a knock-off.

Edit: Just spotted 0 feedback. Bargepole alert.

Is it too good to be true please?

Simple way to find out - if you think it's too good to be true then it is! Those WD 2Tb drives are on Amazon for £150 and they are generally one of the cheaper suppliers so it makes you wonder where he's getting them from that he can sell them at that sort of price.

I would walk away and look to buy from a reputable source.

Re: Home computing help please

Bob, How much data do you have?

Most people just need to back up their Docs, music, photos, videos, contacts, emails and favorites

I use carbonite, an online storage system, costs about £40 per year, but it is backing up all the time, you dont have to remember to do it

Shout if you want further info

Re: Home computing help please

Thanks for the ideas guys.
I've deleted loads of old golf swing videos so that's cleared up a bit of memory.
Plus moved all my music onto the D drive which has helped too

Re: Home computing help please

OK Bob, so you have moved a few things around to free up some space on your main drive

Thats fine

BUT is this data backed up? I suspect not, so unless you want to lose it , you still need to look into a backup solution, which is either going to be a Memory stick, External Hard Drive or online storage.

You still need to do something
