This confuses me something rotten...

SO you play a blinding shot and do something most golfers only do once in a lifetime..

You then get mugged in the bar and everybody and his gran gets in on the free drinks.

fair enough you get some monies back from the Hole-in-one insurance, but I would never ask for a drink. If anything I'd want to buy him a drink.

I'm really interested in peoples thoughts.

It's the way it is.

Done it 3 times.

We have a float of £200 behind the bar as part of our membership. Never cost me a penny.

Mate of mine had one at a municipal. Went into the bar to buy a round, dead chuffed, no one would accept a drink. He was well peeved.

I belive in buying a bottle and sharing it around, that is what I would want to do.

I would rather share my day than have people forced to "pay up"

It may not even come to the average golfer so it is best "as it is" and any change would be against what I feel is the right way to share such an occasion.

I believe it's customary to buy a bottle of whisky and leave it on the bar for anyone to sample and hopefully congratulate you on your feat.

Luckily for me, when I scored mine it was a late summers evening. The course was deserted save for me and my son. To cap it all, the clubhouse was closed too.
Cost me nowt (music to a Yorkshireman's ears!) Though I did kindly buy the lad a can of coke on the way back home!

Having never had one, if i did, i would buy everyone a drink of their choice. Sod the bottle of scotch. Mind you if i got one at a forum meet, it would be a lot of straws and bottle of ginger beer. ;)

We do that, a bottle of whisky on the bar with a note telling what hole & when.

Very civilised.

Managed on during out tri-am a few years back which took us into the prizes. cant really remember much about that night ;)

When I got my unofficial one - there was nobody else on the course and I was solo - I went in the bar and strangely enough there was nobody there either. The barman gave me a beer on the house....

With me being a member of a muni course i would be grudged to buy a drink for everyone at he bar as you get alot of people in there that just come from a meal and have no intreset in golf.

So why should someone like me that earns very little have to fork out a small fortune for one of my golfing achivements?

When I have one at the Beau Desert forum meet I'm not buying anyone a drink.... unless they want water. Same goes for the one I'm going to have at the Blackmoor forum meet

I think the tradition to put a bottle of whiskey on the bar rather than buy everyone a drink is kinda nice. It limits the damage and cuts down costs and seems to be more common these days. When I've seen it done most folks just have a little token drink to the guy who holed in one.

When I got mine we were the last group in a February stableford. Only about 6 people in the bar so I actually bought them all drinks as the steward didn't think it was worth opening a bottle of scotch, so I think I got away lightly.

I've had 5 holes in 1. Some costly some not.

I could count on 1 hand how many drinks that have been bought to me over the years.
One of the times I had a hole in one was a Sunday at our 8th hole. I also had 2 2's, I paid out around £150 quid on drinks, and got £32 into my account for my troubles. Costly.
the 1st year I won the club championship I had one at our 3rd hole, another costly bar bill, but it's not every year we win something as big as the CC.
Heres to the next big bar bill

I had a hole in one at the age of 12 when my dad used to take me playing. Flukiest thing ever, driver off the tee hit it all wrong, it hopped along the fairway rolled through the green up a ridge and came back onto green and into hole. My poor dad felt the need to buy everyone in the bar a drink after. It was in a hotel South of Dublin we were staying in that had a course attached, think it cost him a fortune.

would it cause offence if i was a non drinker, and therefore would not buy myself nevermind anyone else a drink?

maybe i should just mark a 2 on the card if it ever happens lol

Phil

never had one but, id buy everyone in the bar a drink

(and if friends weren't in the clubhouse & on course at the time id buy them one when they got in, or leave £'s behind the bar so they could have one... as im not tight :p

the club i was at had a bell in the bar. u got an ace, u rang it

its each to there own ...if someone couldnt afford to buy everyone a drink not a problem

ive heard it from just buy the group youre playing in

just the ppl sttod at the bar at the time

to everyone

also seen it where theyve skulked off to save themselves a few quid :(

I think it’s down to the person who gets the hole in one. I know that tradition says you should buy everyone in the bar a drink, but not everyone can afford to do that especially in the climate at the moment. If you are inclined to treat everyone fine it is up to your personal choice. To be honest I would never buy all the lads a drink if I scored a hat-trick or as I did in one game save 3 penalties in a shoot out, just got a pat on the back and went home.

Would I buy a drink for everyone at the bar? Well that would be telling, anyway I doubt I will ever have the pleasure with the way I play.

Never had one, been VERY close. When I get mine I will really enjoy buying everyone a drink. I love the idea of it. Hope its tomorrow!! :D
