We applied online for the married tax allowance as suggested on the Martin Lewis STV money programme, 5 days later a £661 cheque arrives for me, yippee .
A week later the wife gets a letter from HMRC saying she has under paid her tax and owes them £ 634.

Did they claim that the underpayment was related to the credit?

It could just be she gets a benefit in kind that happens to incur a similar tax liability, and the timing of the letters is coincidental.

It's impossible to tell without more information, and you probably don't want to be posting all your personal affairs on a forum!

I'm an accountant, happy to help out as such, but would need to see some of the paperwork tbh to know for certain what has happened. If you wish to by all means PM me.

Failing that if you would rather not, then give the HMRC a quick buzz and ask them to explain it all to you (you may strike it lucky and they maybe helpful and knowledgeable).

Thank DRW for the sensible reply, but I'll plod along i've already phoned HMRC but it's not easy talking to them especially when it's some guy with a very strange accent :devilish:. I also emailed Martin Lewis, awaiting his reply (y).

No personal details , we claimed the married tax allowance, on the HMRC web page, as my wife earn less than me, got the rebate now they want it back from her, but the money was paid directly to me.
