I am a beginner looking to buy some clubs. Could I get advice on ping g2 irons with steel shafts and black dot, 3hl 4hl 5hl 6 7 8 9 s w , g2 3 wood, g2 5 wood , taylormade driver r580 10.5, odyssey putter and a cobra carry bag selling for around £290. Is this a good move.

Thanks

Steve

I may be wrong but I would say its a bad move.

Ping dot methods are designed for specific heights etc and black may not be right for you. As your just starting have a look on ebay.

I could be wrong so wait for a few others to respond.

Black dot are standard so if your not getting custom fit then probably best to go with.
G2 range is pretty dated now (not saying its not good) but reckon you could get something newer for your money.

As Siren says Ping have the colour code fitting method. This is the chart here:

If it were me have a wander down to your local GC or AG/Nevada Bobs etc and see what they have in stock both new and 2nd hand to see what you like the look of and perhaps even hit a few if they have that option available. Ping are designed to fit the golfer that's not to say they wont work for you but beware buying Ping products blind( Irons I mean does not matter with Driver/Woods). How are you hitting the ball? have you got the basics right

I've headed to my local AG not got a lot of used stuff in. I've only hit a ball a few times. Hit around 150 yards to the left with my mates clubs

Aren't Ping Black dot the same as any other brand standard set up?

Right a total newbie then really. I would certainly look a having a lesson or two so you get the basics right such as set up/grip/ball position etc. TBH there are lots of forgiving irons out there from various brands. Perhaps enter the Benross competition on this site:)

Oh didn't realise what that was nice one. If you were in my shoes and wanted to get some decent clubs to last a few years what would you go for.

Good question!! As mentioned Ping are good and make some forgiving clubs so perhaps look at Black dot in G10 model and above for your irons. For a couple of woods TM Burners I like, in either the White or non White versions. Putters I only use Odyssey myself so one of those. Have a look on Ebay for those and post up the links if you like and someone will give an opinion. Don't leap in though as it is not a cheap purchase and you wanna get it as right as possible. Gotta go get some kip now, keep in touch and let us know how you get on

No such thing as "Standard" in this game.
Each company has their own standard and it could be very different to another's

Just a couple of examples

G25 6 iron - length 37.25" lie 61.5
Xhot 6 iron - Length 37.75" lie 61.75
Rocketbladz - length 37.625 lie 62.5
Mizuno JPX825 - length 37.25" lie 61

Length is there or thereabouts but there's a 1,5 degree lie difference between JPX and Rocketbladez........

Probably didnt word It very good. I meant If he got ping with black dot he would be getting Pings standard set up. Just like if he got Taylormade burners that hadn't been altered hed be getting TM standard set up. Either way he'd be getting a set of clubs that are standard to a Manufacturers spec for that model, but might not be right for him.
Hope this makes sense

But if he is just a beginner then any off the shelf standard set will do until he actually decides that the stupid game ;) is for him.
