Just wanted to give a quick hello to the forum.

Recently made the decision to get back into golf, I thought I would join the forum I always look for advice on!

I am coming back from a broken ankle in Rugby and feel like its time to get back to golf, as painful as it is. Was playing off 6 when I decided to give it up to focus on Rugby and now 2 years later am having to hang up my boots.

Have to hand in 3 cards soon and was wondering if anyone has any good advice on getting "Course Fit" quickly? I dont want to be that guy that joins the club with a handicap of 18 and over a short period wins competitions! So would rather try and get to a sensible handicap quickly.

The struggle for me is going to be a lot of new clubs and a changed swing due to ankle!

Anyway, I look forward to posting more!

Hey, Im new too - its amazing how walking round a course with a set of clubs is actually quite hard work. Its a different type of fitness all together, I can comfortably go out and do a 5 or 10k run but after a round my feet and legs hurt more than from running. Dont get me started on the back ache from spending too much time on the range!

The only advice I have is to get out there regularly, dont push too hard at first and it should fall into place.

Just got to get out there and play, manage your expectations, you may find you play rubbish for a while and then it clicks.
Dont worry about your handicap too much yet, put your cards in when you think you are ready.

Nobody will accuse an improving golfer of banditry, yes you may win a comp or 2 on the way, but your handicap will soon catch up with you

Then when you plateau we shall see you back for some more advice :)

If you tell them you played off 6 a couple of years ago they should take that into account when allocating your new hc.

As far as shooting sensible scores asap, chipping and putting. It won't take long to get your long game back but the 'feel' shots take a lot longer.

Thanks for the advice!

Hit a fair few balls yesterday and am now hobbling around the office! Main aim is to get to Cat 1 this year! Hopefully the game is there, putting and feel shots were always the hindrance. So extra push is going to go into that, my issue is I find putting practice really boring. I need a way to make it more fun!

Is this true, or common practice? Surely that is open to some abuse if your HCP can be determined, or affected by what you played to 2 years ago, and not solely what you are playing to now.

I'm sure someone can confirm this, but it seems a rather strange and random criteria when allocating someone a new HCP

It is true - if you previously held an Official HC you must let the HC sec know so they can take it into account when issuing a new HC - obviously the time away would be a factor as well
