Has anyone else just give up on a round before?

Played in the mid week stableford competition last night - finished with 27 points but it doesn't exactly paint a picture.

I was 9 over after 13 holes - I felt robbed - utter robbed. I thought screw this it isn't my night and stopped trying - proceeding to blob 3 of the last 5 holes.

I hit so many good putts that just didn't drop - either going behind the hole, stopping next to it or just bobbling a little offline. Missed putts at the 2nd, 3 putt from 6 foot at 3rd, 3 putt on 5th, unlucky missed 10ft at 9, unlucky 15ft missed at 10, again at 12 and then a 4ft one on 13. They wouldn't drop!!! So I just thought its not my night and give up!

6 over after 9 when I should of been 2! Driving well, iron play well and short game was good - just had no luck on the greens! Felt utter deflated!
but I didn't actually hit a bad putt! Not one!

Grrrr - Any tips for overcoming adversity in your round?

Easier said than done but I think they key is not to get too emotional either way. Try to keep the reaction to the highs the same as the reaction to the lows.

Welcome to my world.

I think days like that are an integral part of golf. It just happens from time to time. There's not much you can do, though. Just roll with it. If it happens to me in a social round, I just stop keeping score when things go too bad and try to find enjoyment in my company, the weather, the wildlife, being outside etc. Or the occasional good shot. Golf is an enjoyable pasttime, even if the putts don't fall.

surely its a golf, you cannot shoot the lights out every single time.

Just enjoy it.

I also tend to relax after my score has gone, On Saturday during the King i was 10 over after 9 (five over my handicap) shot level on the back to make buffer (CSS was 75)

Totally agree patrick148 - I just felt deflated because I was playing good golf and wasn't been rewarded for it. :( onwards and upwards mate

those putts that horseshoe round the hole but don't drop are actually ok to count as gone in I think .. same as if your ball is in a bush . just drag it out for free the green is still a way away after all

Can assure you it has happened to most of us. Today's back nine holer, 10 points walking up our 16th, hit my best drive and three wood up there today. Took five to get down from 30 yd. head had gone. 1 point on the next and parred the 18th. To finish on 15 points. Two missed putts from inside 3 ft on the 16th. Lordy flippin Lordy. Don't know whether I gave up or just did not care, but it was in my head big style.
Think that is the differance with the better players, somehow they just seem to shrug off the bad hole and get on with it.

It's golf, it happens, frequently 😕

I just try to maintain a cool persona even if inside I'm annoyed (PPs think I never get flustered but I do)

I also find it useful when this happens to focus on something other than score, such as improving my stats for the round (fairways hit, GIRs, up & downs etc) rather than dwelling on the bad luck/lipouts etc

Sometimes this can lead to a purple patch & I actually end up scoring ok... at the very least take the positives from the round 👍

Don't get into the habit of 'giving up'
