Any step ladders at my work are padlocked to the wall to stop untrained personnel from endangering them selves using them with out training. As a result, we balance on gas lift chairs to change light bulbs. Safer? Not really.

So they have the ladders then do not train anyone to use them? Pretty much all the lab staff in our place have ladder training, cos we all need to use ladders, even if its jus a couple of times a year!

A mate of mine told me a story from his work. Their H&S officer an 18 stone girl who could hardly climb a flight of stairs without getting out of breath came to train the porters on how to lift heavy items.
So she went through all the H&S bull on how to correctly lift an item. One of the porters kept on insisting he didn't understand what she was trying to explain and could she please give him a demonstration. She has not been back to refresh their memories.

I missed the material (boxes) handling course, while off work with a bad back. Golden excuse not to carry so much as pencil. Sorry gov, not done the course.

Also, to correctly pick up a box, you have to wear box handling gloves. I have never seen these for sale. Others wear riggers gloves, but that can't be right. Riggers gloves are for rigging, as boxing gloves are for boxing (and what ever use Smiffy puts them too).

Why has this Country turned into such a nanny state ?

It's because of all the knobs that will sue for the smallest little thing even when it's their fault for being stupid.

The weirdest one we've had at our place is not being able to use step-ladders until you've been 'trained'.

BLadder training is very important!

there fixed it for you (too much to resist) :D

I hope you're joking....ladder training?????

What next,
"door opening for beginners"???
"Advanced drawer closing"

:D :D :D

You're not man enough for 'Advanced drawer closing'

And don't you ever forget it !!

I bet you've never even managed to complete 'Door closing. Year two, term 3 - sliding doors' without losing a thumb or two.

A couple of weeks ago i had to go through a 'face fit' excercise. Wasted 20 minutes of my life being tested to see if the masks i have been using for the past 20 years were appropriate for the job i do, they were. Then got another spiel in how to put a mask on correctly, the person giving us this crap was a total H&S knob, totally humourless.

Re: H&S knob!!!

Bulb in Church light decided it had had enough one Sunday morning.

During the week someone, using the Church hall, decided to replace said bulb when they had a bit of time on their hands.

Bulb from cupboard, steps from back hallway, job finished but wee slip on returning steps resulted in sprained ankle.

Result, happy Church member showing off 'war wound' - money grabbing family of Church member sues Church and wins.

Steps should have been locked up!

Ambulance chasing 'legal beagles' have a lot to answer for.

And this sums up why we have overeaching H&S legislation!

Re: H&S knob!!!

All to do with idiots seeing an opportunity to grab some easy cash and sue for negligence instead of admitting their own incompetence. Now it's here H&S will manifest into an even greater monster in all areas to protect the backside of the employer

Ah yes the famous training procedures I know them well

The wife went to work at a local nursery, when the little darling she was looking after duly cacked his kilt she asked should she change him only to be asked had she been trained. She replied I've had 5 kids how much training do you need?!!

25 years ago we had an H&S guy come into one of our shops and threaten to close the shop if we didn’t find an appropriate place to store one six foot florescent tube that was standing behind a cupboard door.
Now the guy wrote to me and gave us something like 2 weeks to find an alternative location because he was going back to check.
If I remember correctly the Area Manager picked up the light and moved it to another shop, and returned it back to the shop after the second visit.

You'd think, but we have 3 step ladders (Ladder with 3 steps) that the guys can only use the first step of, due to you not being able to stand on the top two steps. So they have a 3' tall ladder and would be as well standing on their toolbox.
