Grips

Number of options. Get on Gamola and get the gear to do it yourself or go to a pro shop, check how many layers of tape you need and see what they have in stock. Personally I'm a lazy git and so get my pro to do mine. He is a good mate and has a limited range, so if I order a grip in he'll charge me just for the tape and labour.

The gamola site has an instructional vid - I'm lazy and my pro did them for me

Doing you own grips is a doddle, all you need is :-

  • Your new grips sized appropriatley for your hands
  • Your new double sided grip tape
  • Stanley Knife or similar with a hook blade, much easier and safer for removing the old grips
  • White spirit

Then remove old grips and tape, measure out how much grip tape you need, cover the end of the shaft and spiral down the tape, repeat if you are doing more than one layer. Get your white spirit and while covering the hole on the end of the grip pour in the white spirit filling the grip, uncover the hole and let the white spirit drain back into the bottle, a bit of kitchen towel soaked in white spirit and wiped over the grip to lubricate will help you slide the new grip on, position grip and set aside for the white spirit to evaporate and the tape to stick.

Golf pride multi compound have been a favourite, but just chanced my arm on some black widow multi compounds from gamola at half price.

There is a shop on ebay doing them. Passes all the reputability test I can think of trying. Only let down is a mobile phone contact number rather than land line. Given the company address is a private house it is probably a small independent internet business rather than retail shop. Been toying with the idea of getting them myself but I'm currently considering new irons so will wait.

I bought a complete set of Longridge Tour velvet grips from ebay and fitted them myself. Firstly I wanted to see the difference between £4 a pop grips and a cheaper grip. I also want to change grips more often as so I'm interested in the longevity of a cheaper grip.
They were a doddle to change with all grips done in about 1 hour including putting on 4 layers of tape and have so far performed as well as the grips I had on before.
In the wet they are no more or less slippy than and the feel from them also feels no different from the Golf Pride grips I had on before. Now I'm just interested in how long they last but as I'm intending to change them at least once a year I'm not overly bothered.

Used to have lamkin REL 3GEN grips on my irons and thought they were great. Didn't use them in the wet though.
Have golf pride multi compound grips on my wedges. Pretty good all weather grip, however they don't feel as nice as the lamkins, may be because they are a lot harder. Don't think i'd like them too much on all my clubs.

Hmmm depends on what you like?

I like a firm grip with a heavy texture pattern, so I went for full cord wrap grips. These:

Did my whole bag for less tha £40 delivered.

If you want something a litle softer feeling in your hands, these are very good:

Again, a full bag done for less than £40.

If you feel you're gripping the club too tight, you may want to check you have the correct size grips, especially if you're doing a full bag.

As an example, I came out on the line between white and gold, so build mine up to be 1/32 oversize (3 layers total), but don't forget to take the butt of the shaft and grip core dimensions into account.

Here's a chart that will help convert the ping colour grips to regular grip sizes:

Hope this helps

thanks for all the advice I have gone with these on my irons and the tour wrap 3gen for a softer feel with my wedges

Good luck, they look like lovely grips.

Easy to do them yourself, hardest part is getting the old ones off. I had to use nail scissors when I did mine a few weeks ago as I didn't have a stanley knife - hard work!

Just make sure you put enough solvent on the tape and in the grip itself. Then put a bit more on. Should slide on easily that way and dead easy to get them lined up.

3Gen material is great in the Lamkin grips.

I had that in the Performance Plus grips a while back (2nd option I posted) and thought they were great.

going to go with the lazy option with regards to fitting, spoke to my pro and he said he would do them for £10, go to range hit some balls, leave my clubs. Next day go back, pick up my clubs, hit some balls, go home.

Not a bad price for a full set.

Place I use (Range) is £3/club. That's probably the reason I do mine myself

Which is exactly what I will be doing shortly, but from the 8 iron down (Itake my glove off for those shots, for some bizarre "mental" reason). You won't regret that choice, Greg.
