Why is a GPS device so expensive - I have freecaddy on my phone a free application which uses the phones GPS to give the info - but I am not allowed to use the phone during comps thus I need a dedicated GPS - but they are soo expensive there is no way I can afford one.

What's the best value GPS - now't fancy just bunkers, front middle and back of green? The Garmin watch at £150 from American golf?

Garmin watch will only give you front, middle and back of green distances.

What phone do you have? Provided it's not an iPhone it's legal for competition use.

You can get a skycaddie 2.5 for not much more than that new.

I think the Garmin watch just does front, middle and back and not any hazards.

Does it have to be new?
You can pick up a second hand Skycaddie SG5 for that price on ebay

You can even an get a Skycaddie SGX on ebay US site for that price but you may have to pay import duty on top of that though.

A new callaway upro was also selling for around the £150 mark for a while but you may find stock (and courses!!) limited now as they are bringing out a new model

You can use your HTC in Comps. It's only the iPhone that's banned as it has a compass app that cannot be removed.

There is no "compulsory" Compass app on Android phones, so you're good to go.

Ah, that may be the case. If DMD's are banned as a local rule then you can't, but if they are permitted, Android devices can be used for the reasons that I mentioned above.

Some golf clubs have banned the use of mobile phones as DMD's and I think the EGU either have or are looking into it. If they do then counties and clubs will more than likely fall in line with this.

I think the thinking is along the lines of you can download all the apps you like then delete them before the end of the round and checking phones isn't really an option.

Personally I think it takes away part of the trust element of our game where individuals are expected to follow the rules and self police at all times. However some may think that the gentlemans game has a few too many non gentle players already.

I,ve got a sonocaddie app on my phone,and is deemed legal at my club. 21 quid and unlimited downloads

Just ban the use of mobile phones on any golf course and this will limit the use of gps just to the specific golf gps devices

spoke to our club captain and he has assured me, and shown me an r and a quote, that if the iphone is only used as a dmd it is perfectly legal.
at last common sense, £18 for golfshot, 30 000 courses world wide, and i can use it, if i want.
there are free ones available i believe, but i am happy with my iphone. stick it in the craddle plug it in and away i go
