gps system

I have a skycaddie sgx can't fault great piece of kit splashed out because of the smart phone issues and wouldn't be without it now.
Expensive yes but we'll worth the money IMO.
That said there is a lot of very happy garmin users and there kit is good quality too.

Thanks Rosecott for this document it's brilliant. I'll print and take it down the club with me as I've lost count of the amount of arguments I've heard regards the use of mobile phone golf GPS apps being used in comps so this will put and end to them.

I use a Skycaddie SGX myself and it's brilliant. IMHO the £30 a year subs is a very small price to pay seeing as everyone who's seen it and compared it against the ones they've been using agrees it's as least as good as and in most cases better than the ones they use. The Skycaddie website and customer services are also excellent.

Not so much sheltered just did not understand the ruling. I have the latest all singing all dancing smart phone but it does not measure wind speed or direction and does not have the ability to measure temperature so I did not thing that it would be illegal to use in competition.

I thought all Galaxy SIII's came with Accuweather widget as standard (or any Galaxy range handset, I have the Note, my Mrs has the SIII and both have Accuweather and Navigation apps on them).

Yes they do, but accuweather is no more accurate with relation to golfing than holding up a wet finger or looking at what way a flag is blowing. It only gives you a rough idea of the weather and the temperature at the local weather station.

And there in lies the problem. Sensible or not, relevant to golf or not, it's the rule and it's why it becomes illegal for use in comps.
It tells you the temperature, doesn't say in the rules that it has to tell you accurate temperature.

I see where the ruling is coming from greig. I had just interpreted it in a different way. I just saw that my phone does not give accurate weather or wind info so it meant it was legal to use. But now I see it different.

It caught a few guys up at my club in the open a couple of weeks back. Think 4 got DQ'd for it.
Temperature I can kind of see where that makes sense but compass...?? How does knowing North help me put my ball in the hole?
It's a mental rule indeed.

So how do they explain that the compass on the pages of the yardage books are ok?
Another rule probably dreamed up in Brussels

This is why I am confused by them being illegal. It just sounds like some old duffer in an office who does not know what he is talking about has made it up. The temperature reading on it is only a forecast made from a local weather station like the wind speed and direction. What next....ban flags from courses as it shows the wind direction? Regarding temperature it does not make any difference really, I know myself if it brass monkeys out there and the ball not fly as far. But like I have said, now I know I will have to abide by the rules no matter how crazy I think they are. Thanks for waking me up to this Greig.....

No worries. I think an interesting thread would be to list the rules of golf that are obviously either a) outdated or b) mental.

Actually I think it's more of a business move. Think about all the money invested by Garmin, SkyCaddie, SonoCaddie, Snooper etc GPS is a big business that could be on its knees if smartphone apps become legal...

Back to the OP you might want to consider the Shotmiser G700 as another option. Not sure about the others but this comes with a practice facility so you can calculate your club distances. Also has no download costs / subscription. http://www.shotmiser.com/shotmiser-golf-gps-rangefinder-g700.html?gclid=CJL84PnBirICFeTLtAodwA4ALA

I
thing the only 'faff' comes if you carry your clubs. I use a trolley and mine is mounted on the handle so I can see distance when I get to the ball and can also find distances to any point on course. I like mine because it rotates as you move around the course, so what's in front of you is shown on the screen

Happy shopping...

In one of the golf mags this month (Todays Golfer I think) they did a test between GPS devices. Can't remember which came out on top, but I did notice that on the next page the winning unit was a prize in a competition. I hope they won the comparison before they became the prize in a competition, and not the other way round.

I'm on my second SkyCaddie SGX, initial one was poorly engineered but replacement one is good. Annual subs are a bit of a pain, but I knew about them before I bought it. They do claim to be the most accurate as the courses are all measured by people walking the courses and not by using satellite images. But at my level I'm not sure it makes a huge amount of difference.

I do find the distance to and distances to clear a number of hazards on the hole a very useful feature, saved me a few balls where previously I might of tried to clear a water hazard, until the unit told me exactly how far I would have needed to hit it to carry to do it. So I now lay up a lot more.

They have updated this version with a wifi one now, but from the comparison report apparently they have made it harder to use on the course by replacing a toggle button (which worked well) with some kind of tracker (which doesn't).

My view on DMDs is apparently antediluvian ;-) and so I shall not progress that point further.

However - in the context of Smartphones I can concur with GiF. My club has a notice stating the GPS apps on Smartphones can be used but all other apps have to be disabled i.e. it's not good enough to say you didn't use them - or indeed say you won't. They have to be set so they can't be used. As I am not a Smartphone apps guy (no surprises there then) I don't know whether switching an app off is the same as disabling it. Anyway - point with Smartphones is that the player is not trusted to not use other apps he might have on his phone. And yes - it is a DQ offense.
