Hello Newbie here

I'll be asking santa for a GPS for xmas, and after a lot of reserch. I have managed to narrow it down to 3.

Skycaddie (Which seems to be very popular on here)
Sureshot 8800
Caddie Aid

All seem to have pro's and cons, and I just can't seem to make my mind up. Any constructive comments apreciated.

Skycaddie SG5 aproxx £300

This seems to be very popular, but is limited to what it does.

Sureshot 8800 approx £200

This seems to have a lot of anaylasis funtions which would be handy for after your game to see how you've done.

Caddie Aid approx £300 or £100 if you have your own PDA

Now I realy like the look of this one, and the functions as regards to interigating the coarse are fantastic, but no analitical software.

Now I don't want to make the wrong decision so this is where you all come in.

Can't seem to get the voting working.....ah well that'll teach me for trying to be to clever on my first post.

I own, and voted for SG5. I don't over analyse anyway, so that sort of function is useless to me, and also, in the heat of battle, taking time out to enter loads of data would never get done. To me it is the sort of novelty that would soon wear off.

On my own course, I only use the distance to front/mid/back of green data, as I know if I can carry the bunkers anyway.

It is expensive though.

I think to be fair murph, thats all I will probably use.

So that would narrow it down to the Skycaddie and the CaddieAid....I must say, I do like the airial photograph of each hole on the CaddieAid

SC is by far and away the most accurate system available as they measure the courses themselves (when they are allowed too!!)......

Stats wise, as HJS says, Scoresaver 2 for me. I've recently got my playing partners into it as well.

Caddyaid for the GPS. Have my own GPS enabled PDA / phone so only £100. Only reason I haven't bought it yet is although the course has been mapped, it's adding new holes and removing some at the moment and I don't know how long it'll be before they get the new info to download.

I'll think you'll find that most on here are in the Skycaddie camp.

I recently looked at the sureshot but when I checked out the list of courses covered it didn't do a lot of the courses I wanted including my new home course, so for any choice of GPS it could be the deciding factor.

I personally think the caddieaid is a better system, but for shear compromise of simplicity & rugedness with courses coverd I'd probably say for a lot of people skycaddie may be the best solution, as long as you are prepared to still buy the course planners to get lay of land info

Just got my SG5 today, ( Only £249 ) very nice and easy to use, but down side to using it was I now know I only hit my drives 225 ydrs !!

I must say, it is very good to have and to know the distance to the green, speeds up play a lot.

A dumb question but.....do all these devices show measurements in metres, yards, or both?

Either....you can select whatever you want.... :p

Thankyou sammabee, just interested as a friend of mine got a little confused when telling me on the phone how short a particular hole was ( I knew the hole well) the measurements he gave were obviously metres but he couldnt have noticed. The hole in question was one I helped measure and do a little graft on when the club was extending the course so I knew exactly how long it was. He too raised the issue of hitting a lot shorter on many holes than he previously thought so maybe hes been reading metres for everything. Should I tell him?lol
