I have an i phone 4 and there is an app called Golfshot GPS that looks quite good for about £20.
Has anyone tried the app and is it any good ?

lots of posts about it (and the iphone side of things)

I use golfshot and think its very good, the stats it provides are useful aswell. Obviously only use it in friendly rounds as banned in comps :(

worth the purchase especially if you visit other courses a lot, I found it a godsend at the forest of arden as the distance markers were nigh on non-existant

Skycaddie would probably be a bit more accurate - they walk the courses plotting the layout precisely whereas a lot of the others use photos. Not going to be a huge difference though.
Skycaddie is also allowed in comps subject to tha Local Rule but iPhone 4's ain't - search for a multitude of threads on this one.....
I'd also be a little wary of using my expensive Smartphone in the rain - ok Some SC's are not waterproof but they're a darn sight better than an iPhone........

I had golfshot for a year before I gave in and got myself a Sky caddie sg5 last month.
GS is a very good app, I would certainly recommend it if you don't want to spend a few quid on a sky caddie.

In my opp having owned the skycaddie for a month I would give the app a miss and save up a few pennies and get the Sg 2.5 for £99 or get that Garnin watch thingy.

I have GolfShot and I really like it. It has helped me find my way around my local course and I think it is very accurate (Or at least when I stand on the Tee it matches the signs, when I stand at the 100 yard posts it matches the posts).
I really like the ariel photographs too.

Does anyone know if the garmin watch can be used in comps and does it store stats ?
I dont mind paying out but want to see the advantages if any over the app.

i don't think the garmin watches store stats and they are very basic but they give the most important info which is the distance to front, middle and back.

i personally would go for the skycaddie sg2.5 or 5.

I'm very new to the game and golfshot has been invaluable to me. The main benefit is it has stopped drastically under / over clubbing on approach shots. As mentioned previously, if you play new courses regularry it has a great overview of each hole where you can identify hazards / dog legs / features etc. I don't use the statistics much but think I will when my scores become more consistent. It stores previous rounds, clubs you've used on each hole, fairways and greens in reg, plus loads more. Trumpy at £20 but been worth every penny to me.

I have the GS app but I got myself a GolfBuddy World Platinum on sale and I find it much superior than the SkyCaddy a few friends have.
With GolfBuddy you switch it on in carpark attach to bag or trolley and it finds the course you are at itself and what teebox you are starting at, it automatically moves to next hole as you do. It is also waterproof and has no annual subscription. Plus it has over 40,000 courses worldwide built in. Mine gets me 2x18 hole rounds and a 9 hole round on a single charge.
My friends Sky Caddies all need to be manually changed from hole to hole which can at times slow them down plus there is an annual fee of £30 I think for Uk and you must download each course individually. Then pay extra should you go abroad. I think these may also need a waterproof cover.
Distances and targets are all very similar on GB SC and GS.
Golf shot app is very hard on battery plus as has been said not waterproof plus lose satellite signals quite frequently and if you don't use it every shot and teebox it will stop satellite connection and not find it again fast enough for you to hit your shot on time. This also needs changed from hole to hole. iPhone's also can't be used in competitions due to the compass and weather apps that can give wind direction and speed.
