Can anyone give me a few ideas for a golf weekend away with a few mates staying in a hotel with dinner and / or breakfast around Berks / Herts / South England ish area. Looking for a couple of rounds, ideally on 2 different courses over the 2 days. Interested in trying somewhere different to Celtic Manor, the Belfry or Arden as we have done them to death.

Budget is anything up to 200 quid I guess.

Someone suggested a place (which I am sure is in Herts) that looked very nice with a big hotel on and some lovely looking courses, but I can't for the life of me remember it.

I would make the extra journey down to St Mellion, straight down the M5. they do some fantastic deals and the Nicklaus course is brilliant.

Other another option is East Sussex National. also, both very good courses.

Maybe the grove was the place suggested in Herts or possibly Stoke Park but that is in Bucks, would have thought both would be more than £200 though.

How about playing a combination of Ashridge/Berkhamsted/Moor Park/Sandy Lodge?

St Mellion looks nice, although perhaps a little bit of a trek... will take a closer look though so thanks for the suggestion.

From our Golf Monthly 50 top stay and play venues rankings:

No.26 Foxhills, Surrey
Price: £170 Courses: 3 –
Bernard Hunt, Longcross,
Manor W: foxhills.co.uk

Just 20-minutes from Heathrow, Foxhills can boast two 18-hole layouts and also a short nine-hole par-3 course. Set over a 440-acre estate, the resort features a health club, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis and squash courts and a state-of-the-art gym. Accommodation is in one of the individually decorated rooms or suites while the Manor Restaurant delivers a variety of dining options from a lunch buffet to a Sunday carvery.

No.27 Goodwood, West Sussex Price: £217 Courses: 2 – Downland, Park
W: goodwood.co.uk
There’s possibly no play and stay venue that can boast such an abundance of off-course activities as Goodwood. The Estate is famous for its racecourse and for motorsport, but there’s also a flying school, sailing and fishing. Golf has been played at Goodwood since the late 19th Century and there are now two golf courses. The Goodwood Hotel provides chic and contemporary accommodation as well as an excellent health club.

No.34 East Sussex National,
East Sussex Price: £185 Courses: 2 – East, West
W: eastsussexnational.co.uk

When the hotel was added to East Sussex National’s impressive facilities a few years ago, its styling mirrored that of the existing clubhouse with its distinctive round towers, one of which houses the à la carte restaurant with views out over the East course and South Downs beyond. All the spacious, well-equipped rooms offer that same view. The courses themselves are great fun and require different skills for each. The East course offers room to open the shoulders, while the West has greater character, especially
when it plays up towards the charming Horsted Place hotel. There are a number of water hazards on both, but the extensive practice facilities provide ample scope to warm
up before taking them on.

No.47 Old Thorns, Hampshire
Price: £159
Courses: 1 W: oldthorns.com
Designed by eight-time Ryder Cup player Peter Alliss together with Dave Thomas, the course at Old Thorns Manor Hotel features a number of elevated holes giving panoramic views of the surrounding Hampshire countryside. Set in 400 acres, it’s a tight layout demanding accuracy from start to finish as the holes wind past mature trees and natural springs. The hotel offers a variety of bars and restaurants – there’s even a Starbucks on site! Old Thorns has also installed some eco friendly camping pods which have become a huge success with both campers and leisure guests. Pods are well built, insulated wooden huts that provide basic accommodation, much in the way of a tent.

Goodwood Downs is such a good golf course, and other than playing with a member, the stay and play package is your only option to play it.

Old thorns is a great course too, would certainly sort a round at Liphook out if staying there too, its 2mins down the road!

I played in an Open the other week with a couple of Goodwood members, they both raved about it.

East Sussex National is another good option I would give thought to. Played both courses which I enjoyed, especially the West which used to be the 'members' course years ago. Not stayed in the hotel so can't comment on that but the golf is good
